Alesis 3630 Compressor LimiterSince its introduction, the Alesis 3630 Compressor has become the most popular dynamics processor ever made. The reason is easy to understand: it provides two independent full-featured compressor/ limiters in one rack space while offering excellent sonic quality for any application from studio recording to live sound or broadcast. The 3630 offers Ratio, Threshold, Attack and Decay controls to customize its compression response for even the toughest signals. You can also choose between RMS and Peak compression styles, plus Hard and Soft Knee dynamic curves for every application from subtle gain control to in-your-face punch.
As an independent dual-channel compressor, the 3630 offers separate controls for two different source signals. Plus, two fully independent gates with threshold and rate controls allow you to easily and efficiently stifle unwanted ambient noise. Other advanced dynamics processing features such as precise signal metering, a sidechain for keying or ducking effects and stereo linkable operation make the 3630 the most powerful compressor in its class. Alesis' two independent compressor/gates make it a good buy.
With the Stereo-link switch, control both sides as one for any stereo application.
Or give each a different signal. Or, put them in the chain: compress here,
limit there. Controls: threshold, release, attack, output, hard/soft knee,
peak/RMS detection. Dual LED meters.

| This is a great unit...except that it will turn your mix into a non-musical-sounding mush. It's solidly-built, easy to use, and the noise gates work pretty well, but the compression will really make your mix sound pretty nasty. I would never consider using this for a stereo mix. It might be okay for using on drums, but that would be about it. Other marks against the 3630: it uses a bulky, wall-wart power supply; it does not have balanced ins and outs. In summary, there are a lot better units out there for the same price or less. | |

| The Alesis 3630 is a great value but there are some things that I would have like to have seen on this unit. I don’t like that this compressor/limiter can only be manually set in “peak mode”. The other thing that I noticed and did not like is the “make up gain”. It was good when the gain is left alone to read 0 but when the gain was amplified to get back your volume from the compression the noise from the “makeup gain” amp was very unsatisfying. In short if you are like me and want a very clean signal with options to have full control over your signal, then this compressor is not for you. For the the cost of the unit you can’t go wrong if you need some peak controls in tracking, but that is not a unit that I would be using to compress my signals at mixing time to the Pre Master or Dat. | |
