The big names now building certain models in China, like Guild, Ibanez, Alvarez, etc, seem to use the same glues and methods as in the original factories. I expect this will hold up well. I do wish the nut was bone (what do you want for $400?) and the x-bracing was modified offset. But to get that, you need a $2,000 Martin, or Gibson or some custom house guitar. This is a steal by any measure. Chinese guitars don't hand select wood grains for appearance purposes. But this is painted all black, so you wouldn't see a nice curly maple even if they used it. Very nice and vivid abalone on the soundhole and top binding, as well as the Alvarez logo. I will put a clear thin plastic pickguard material on the body since it has no pickguard. Sound: As expected: more volume in the bass strings than you get from a dread, but keeps a twangy tone on them due to the maple body. Very balanced. The bone nut should give a bit better sustain than it does, but acceptable. I may change the plastic nut to a Graphtech. I already changed the plastic bridge pins to ebony. Reliability: Just got it. I expect it will be good for me - I never beat on instruments - it wastes $, and looks crappy. It doesn't take much effort to be careful - a lot less effort than it takes to earn the $ for a new one. Overall: Nicely made.Slim neck profile. Probably a polyurethane finish, which makes it not as loud as it could be, as does the symetrical x-braced body. Still good volume, though.Standard fret height, bright full tone with ph-br strings maple body(fingerpicking tone when using flesh and not picks or fingernails). For strumming with a pick I'd recommend D'Aquisto brass strings for bassier tone and a tad more volume. Body is about 1/2" smaller in all dimensions than my Guild J65 jumbo, or a Gibson SJ200. I got this for fingerpicking in an alternate tuning. For the price, I won't worry about the tuning causing a twist in the neck over time - but have done this on a Chinese all solid dread for a few years and the neck is still straight. Playability and Feel: Nice slim neck profile - not a tree trunk like most Martins, or a Gibson SJ. When I lower the saddle a bit, this will be very fast for an acoustic perfect for how I plan to use it. I have other guitars setup for hard strumming. Tone: See "sound" above. No pickups. Finish: Nice looking and no mistakes, but it's poly, not NC lacquer. Poly doesn't age nicely as the lacquer. It will stay the same color for 50 years, while lacquer yellows beautifully in a few years. The poly is also on with a thicker coating, more rigid, etc. inhibiting the volume potential of the big body to a degree. But, my other poly all solids from China have improved tone appropriately as they aged. Action: I got the first one and the neck had an "s" hump at the neck joint (it, making it impossible to fix with the truss rod. I sent it back and it was promptly replaced within 2 days. The 2nd one was perfectly straight (with the normal relief). Action was pretty good for factory setup and OK for strumming chords. I will lower the bridge saddle some to make it a bit faster for the type of playing I do - I use the entire neck and do a lot of runs and fillers while fingerpicking. Frets are standard height, which I like on an acoustic, so that pressing too hard doesn't mess up the intonation. BTW, the bridge saddle angle uses a double compensated bridge at a slighht;y shallower angle than normal. As such, the intonation is spot on, but you will never find a saddle like this from Graphtech to have a different height for winter or summer neck movement. You either have to make a custom made replica, or use the truss rod. I prefer 2 different height bridges. It's much easier to change twice a year.
