A good, but not great, mandolin -- good deal for the money.
What is your overall opinion of this product?
There aren't many decent, low-cost oval hole mandolins on the market, and even fewer with a wider neck and larger frets than the offerings by Eastman and Kentucky. The Breedlove Crossover 00 wins on those points, and it has a good, warm tone and seems sturdy enough. However, the plywood back and sides do detract from the tone a bit, and the U-shaped neck hurts my hand after chording for a while. I'll either have to get used to it (or modify my playing style), or I'll have to take a scraper to the neck and make it into more of a "C" shape (without unexpectedly discovering the truss rod, I hope). It also is a bit heavier than I expected (and heavier than my Eastman F-style 515). For all these reasons, I've debated returning it. But for $299, I guess I'll keep it around to electrify with a jjb pickup for use with an Americana band and for string band, Irish, Scottish and Acadian fiddle accompaniment.
