Product Description

The Cascade Knuckle Head Short Ribbon Microphone with Lundahl Transformer is a passive ribbon microphone that combines the acoustic components of the successful Fat Head ribbon microphone with a shockmounted headbasket design reminiscent of early broadcast microphones.

The ribbon motor uses Neodymium magnets surrounding a 2.2-micron corrugated aluminum ribbon measuring 5x45 millimeters. The ribbon is mounted symmetrically within the magnetic gap, making the Knuckle Head suitable as the ‘mid’ microphone in a MS setup - the front and back of the microphone should produce the same sound.

The ribbon motor and headbasket are suspended within a 6-inch diameter metal hoop by eight springs. The output transformer is located within the cylindrical shaft below the shockmount hoop.

I've only owned mine a short time. I opened it to check out the assembly and parts and it is definitely very well built and solid.

What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could?
The reason that I researched ribbon mics and eventually bought a Cascade Knuckelhead was to advance my guitar amp recording sound options and quality. That is exactly what this does and that is its greatest feature, although the shockmount, solid build, ability to get closer to the source than other shockmount seated mics and the cool appearance are all great features. I am very happy to now see AMS carrying the Cascade line and Knucklehead. Since AMS has proven themselves to me as dependable, knowledgeable and trustworthy in the past, I'll check back before the next mic purchase. This is basically the Fathead mics with the shockmount built into the assembly in a way that lets you have both shock mount protection and get close to a guitar cab or other source if you want. I have no idea how you'd improve on this. This is the model with the Lundahl transformer, so that's another great option already included.
Ease of Use
How easy is this product to use? How easy is the product to use with other products? Did it take long for you to learn to use this product? Was the manual helpful? How playable do you consider this product to be?
Like any other mic, I move it around the guitar cab speaker to find the places that it "hear" the best sound. It's simple. I was using SM57s and an NT1000 up against the grill, but I've been using this about 8 to 10" away from the speaker. Follow the manual's instruction on how to care for the mic. Simple. A pop filter is advised to protect the ribbon if using for vocals or other wind generating sources.

How is the tone?
Compared to the SM57 dynamic, which is that classic thin and raw sound and the NT1000 Condenser which is bigger, deeper and bright on the top end, The Knucklehead (Fathead) has a fuller, thicker, lush sound with the highs rolled off and it sounds great doubled and panned without creating mix mud. AT this point, I've recorded and done a rough mix. I have older tracks with the other mics mentioned that I may use to brighten/ enhance the Knucklehead tracks, but maybe not because the Knucklehead tracks sound great and pro on their own. It's just a question of flavor, but the knocklehead tracks will be the primary guitar tracks.

Your general opinion of this product.
This mic gives the most realistic representation of the amp sound that I've been able to record so far. I'm VERY impressed. I've been used to hearing the thinner mics for so long that I had to adjust to hearing those more lush sounds, but that didn't take long! I now understand why ribbon mics have such a legendary place throughout recording history!
