The Mbox 2 still is a compact USB powered unit with the capability of 4x2 simultaneous channels of I/O on analog, digital and MIDI connections but still retains the easy operation of the original Mbox. In 1995 Digidesign became a division of Avid Technology, Inc., the world leader in digital nonlinear media creation, management, and distribution solutions for the film, video, audio, animation, games, and broadcast industries. Since joining forces, Digidesign and Avid have led the industry by offering innovative and powerful integrated platforms for the creation, management, and delivery of digital media. Digidesign’s industry-standard Pro Tools software is the predominant creation tool in the professional audio community, and has been instrumental in the creation of album recordings as well as film, television, and radio broadcast post production.
In early 2004 Digidesign unveiled the ICON integrated console environment, featuring the D-Control and D-Command worksurfaces, Pro Tools|HD Accel as the core DSP engine, and modular Pro Tools|HD audio interfaces. Since its introduction, Digidesign has sold thousands of ICON consoles to professional music and post production studios around the world.
Later in 2004 Digidesign announced VENUE, a purpose-built live sound digital mixing environment, marking the company’s entry into the professional sound reinforcement market. Since its introduction, VENUE systems have been adopted by many of the world’s top touring musicians, and are also rapidly gaining adoption as the system of choice in the club, house of worship, and corporate A/V markets.
In August 2004 Avid acquired M-Audio, a leading provider of digital audio and MIDI solutions for musicians and audio professionals. Since becoming a part of the Avid Audio division, M-Audio markets its line of computer audio peripherals, PCI sound cards, keyboard controllers, personal recorders, microphones, speakers, Pro Tools M-Powered software, proprietary sound libraries, and M-Audio-distributed third-party software alongside Digidesign’s award-winning digital audio workstations for the professional and personal studio markets.
In 2005 the German virtual instrument design group Wizoo joined the Avid Audio family, and now comprises the core of the Digidesign Advanced Instrument Research (A.I.R.) group. This R&D team focuses on developing inspiring, creative virtual instrument plug-ins for Pro Tools systems, with an emphasis on tight integration and reliable performance.
In 2006 Sibelius joined the Avid Audio family. Sibelius is the world market leader in developing software for professionals, educators, and students to write, teach, learn, and/or publish music. Digidesign and M-Audio leverage Sibelius’ strong ties in the education market to expand the number and type of products the companies can offer to educators and students.
