Product Description

The PAF Joe™ is the new neck pickup that DiMarzio developed for Joe Satriani. Joe wanted a neck position humbucker that combines the best qualities of the DiMarzio PAF Pro® with those of a late '50s Gibson humbucker. Joe described this tone as being "tubular". Through the use of Virtual Vintage® technology, clear-sounding low frequencies are blended with warm-sounding mids and high frequencies, which makes the PAF Joe™ equally good for chords and single notes. It was first used by Joe throughout the 2003 G3 tour.

What does “tubular” mean? In this case, it means making low notes "speak" more clearly while giving high notes a rounder voicing. This accomplishes two goals: chords have better definition, and single notes at higher fret positions remain warm-sounding rather than getting thinner.

Playability and Feel
Tremendous Tone.
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
Typical very good quality DiMarzio design and manufacture.
How has it stood up over time?
Your general opinion of this product.
I have installed these DP213 Joes in three guitars now, one of which was my own Les Paul. The tone and voicing is far superior to the stock Gibson 490R neck position pickups. The owners of the other instruments (a 2009 Gibson Les Paul Studio and a 1984 Fender Telecaster) are both VERY happy with the sounds of their instruments now. This is a very good neck position pickup. It pairs nicely with the DiMarzio DP215 EVO II.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
The tones available from this pickup are the reason to buy it: I cannot say enough good things about it. It chunks up nicely in humbucking mode, sounding round and very warm. But with the single inside coil tapped (an easy mod as it is wired four conductors) this pickup is really beautiful. If you love the sound of your guitar, the sound of the wood of your guitar, then this pickup will capture and enhance that for you. Just an outstanding pickup, clean or driven. Also, if you wire it with a series/tap/parallel switch, the parallel mode will yield a nice acoustic tone.
How did the stain or paint job look?
Black with chrome adjustment poles: looks like rock & roll to me.
