Mackie MR8 Powered Studio Monitor

Mackie MR8 Powered Studio Monitors deliver power and performance, at an unbelieveable price!
When you’re ready to make the switch to pro studio monitors, there are many things you need to consider. For instance, it’s up to you to create a mix that works on a variety of speakers - one that translates to boomboxes, home and car stereos, even headphones and portable music players. So you need monitors that deliver a neutral starting point, and sound that is clear across the frequency spectrum. You also want monitors with consistent performance, so whether you’re on axis or off, cranking ’em up or turning ’em down low, what you’re hearing is accurate. And you want all this at a reasonable price.

Mackie MR8 Features
  • Studio monitor with true Active design
  • Precision Class A/B amplifiers with Active protection circuits: 150 Watts (100W for LF / 50W for HF)
  • HF and LF acoustic controls for room correction
  • Balanced XLR, TRS and unbalanced RCA inputs
  • Ultra-low distortion 8-inch steel frame LF transducer
  • Waveguide loaded 1-inch high-resolution HF transducer
  • Minimum-diffraction molded baffle for smooth, wide sweet zone
  • Magnetically shielded for safe placement near computer/video monitor
  • Precisely tuned for working interchangeably with other MR units
Mackie MR8 and MR5 Studio Monitors deliver truly professional quality and everything you need for critical monitoring—at a price that’s unbelievably affordable. Wide, even dispersion means a broad sweet spot, minimizing funny dips or peaks in frequency response when you move off axis. You get superior bass extension—tight and free from distortion—so your lows pack just the right amount of punch. And to ensure the best sound possible for your setup, the MR Series monitors feature acoustic controls so you can tune them to fit your room. With their Active bi-amplified architecture, wide dispersion, ultra-flat frequency response and outstanding bass performance, you get superior imaging with impeccable clarity, for a truly inspirational, non-fatiguing monitoring experience.

Mackie MR Series monitors achieve their transparent sound quality thanks to these key design elements:

Minimum-Diffraction Molded Baffle:
When it comes to baffle design, shape matters; it plays a role in how sound waves travel. Mackie's baffle is precisely molded to minimize diffraction, so sound waves radiate smoothly, and are dispersed optimally. Mackie's precision waveguide is designed to ensure broad, even dispersion, and a smooth transition between highs and lows. The result is a crystal clear image of your mix, with an ultra-wide, even sweet spot. Whether you’re in mix position or not, on axis or off, you’ll always hear an accurate representation of your mix.

Amplifier Design:
Amplifiers are the power behind a monitor’s sound, but they can also color it. Unlike with passive monitors, our amplifiers are precisely matched to the monitor design. Featuring Mackie's proven Class A/B architecture, the MR Monitors’ amplifiers are meticulously tuned to deliver ultra-flat frequency response, so the sound remains neutral. To compensate for room characteristics, acoustic controls allow you to adjust High Frequency and Low Frequency settings (+/-2dB). Balanced inputs allow you to get the best signal possible, but the option of unbalanced inputs mean you can connect easily to any source. And MR Monitors deliver enough power to handle the toughest source material, at sound levels beyond sane people’s requirements.

Cabinet:
A speaker’s cabinet is more than just an enclosure—it’s another component that affects the overall quality and character of the sound. Mackie's cabinet features a rear port, carefully tuned to deliver superior bass performance with no audible vent noise. Because air passes through the precisely engineered curved port easily, there is no distortion, and no build-up of pressure within the cabinet that could affect driver movement. The rigidity of the cabinet’s precision-braced MDF construction also prevents vibration, meaning your sound is always free from unwanted resonance.

Transducers:
Transducers are responsible for converting your electrical signal into sound, so consistent, unwavering performance is a must if you want sonic clarity. Mackie specifically creates their ultra-low distortion steel frame woofers and waveguide-loaded silk dome tweeters to work perfectly in concert with all the components in each MR monitor. You get a precisely tuned monitor that performs with impeccable consistency.

Applications
MR Series Monitors are ideal for a variety of applications. Use the MRs to empower your mixes in the studio, or to add pro sound to your multimedia, gaming or home theatre system. You can even use them for a great-sounding home DJ rig. The MR5 and MR8 Monitors share the same design, so they function great together, too, making them optimal for multiple monitor setups—just add a Big Knob—as well as surround systems. For any applications where high quality sound and classic good looks are required, MR monitors are the perfect fit.
Mackie's Reputation Speaks for Itself
Mackie never means to toot their own horn, but there’s a reason serious pros love their gear. With every product they release into the wild—from monitors to loudspeakers to mixers—Mackie ups the ante on performance, reliability and affordability. Their innovation and commitment to great sound is why so many Mackie products are top sellers, and why their gear has legions of enthusiastic devotees.

Okay, that sounded a little like a toot. But the point is, they make great stuff and they’re proud. And they’re really proud of their MR Series. Sure, there are lots of other affordable so-called studio monitors out there, but they just don’t cut it when compared to the MR Series—and they aren’t backed by Mackie's years of experience. Thanks to their hardworking and knowledgeable audio experts, Mackie has once again set a whole new standard. Simply put, Mackie MR5 and MR8 Monitors sound and perform better than anything else in their class… But with the Mackie name, what else would you expect?

Subject:Great Studio Monitor at a Great Price
Quality: The speakers are quit big and I was surprised at first. Like I said they are uncolored and honest. If you have a pop click or hiss you will hear it. Try playing your favorite albums through these guys and you'll be amazed at some of the mistakes you'll hear that the studios didn't catch, that's when I knew these were the real deal.
Features: They sound really good and the features were what I was looking for. I was considering some M-audio in the same price range. My friend had the $499 M-audio for the pair but these were way better. You get great control over your hi's and low's which the M-audios didn't offer and had way to much low end but these you can adjust just right to get an accurate uncolored true sound. They can be on the low end side a tad bit until adjusted and in some circumstances the room treated with a bass trap or two.
Ease of Use: They were really easy to use. Just hook them up and make sure you have your mixer on mute and all the way down. Crank the the back and set them all at normal and turn up the mixer. Then just adjust the gain on the speakers for your room and sensitivity on the main mixer. There are no marks on the gain knob just a little slit you can align with a little screw driver or marking yourself to get each speaker at the same level if you don't want them at 10.
Sound: The tone is great but like I said they can be a little on the low end if you don't properly adjust them to you room. Make sure they are not directly against the walls and buy some of those pads to decouple them to get the most out of them. The Highs are very accurate also. I listen to some pro mixes from major studios and caught mistakes I never hear before. Like a synth not cross faded out and cutting off. You can hear great detail in mixes and that's what you want in a studio monitor! When i brought up my old mixes I was amazed at how off I was. I remixed some songs and then played them from a normal stereo, ipod, car ect. and they sounded great in all of them! Cut down on a whole lot of extra mixing I use to do!
Reliability: The only problem I had was when I first got them. You need to ground them and break them in a little. One sounded a little lower than the other till I grounded it and wore them in for a day or two and broke in my new trs cables. But I'm very happy with these and think they are perfect for any home studio. You can't go wrong with these!
Overall: Overall I like these a lot and I didn't have to break bank to get them for my home studio. One thing is you want to make sure to set them up right. At first I had issues monitoring at low levels and my neighbors not liking it so much. Do your research and they will work on your room big or small. I realized I had the bass ports 3inches from the wall and the gain on the back all the way up. This made my main on the mixer very sensitive and my whole apartment really bassy. For an apartment or smaller room I recommend setting them up long ways like a triangle facing them. Also keeping the gain at 60 on the back depending on room size and overall sensitivity. This way you have more control on the main and the bass equals out. I recommend having at least 6feet between the back and the front like a triangle so they won't reflect into the walls. This will make for better sound and not carry into the next room as much. But overall besides just learning, these are the best in this price range.

Subject:Great sound for the money, but...
Quality: See my comment on "reliability" I read on the Mackie forum that Mackie have moved production to China and unfortunately there is been issues with QC In this case it seems the limiters that are compressing the signal are not properly calibrated to the correct RMS level and hence the not robust (cheap?) tweeters fry easy...
Features: Nice adjustable parameters to adjust sound to your room/studio.
Ease of Use: Couldn't be easier, except for perhaps a power button in the front instead of the back, but no big deal, I control all power from my rack with a switcher.
Sound: Simply awesome for this price range, excellent sound.
Reliability: I had this monitors since June of 2008, bought them here at AMS. They had very light use and since I work in a small home studio I always keep the gain dial at back of them turned at around 60%, and the main outs never go over 70% on my mixer, this is plenty loud in very well sound treated studio. With that said, I did a compilation of my mastered songs for auditioning, at about 40 minutes of play the left tweeter went out, I thought it was the over excursion protection switch that had gone off to protect the tweeter, so I turned off the pair, later when I turned off again, both the tweeters were not working... I am very glad I purchase them here at AMS, Mackie gives only 1 year warranty on the MR8's but AMS gave me a free extra year with the gold lock protection warranty, they were awesome and painless to deal with, my MR8's now in service and will be returned to me at no cost, except for $40 I paid for shipping the set to them, thank you AMS!
Overall: Solid built, heavy, looks very nice in the studio, love the sound, and love the price, but see bellow for reliability and quality.
