Tobias Toby Deluxe V 5 String Electric Bass Guitar Features

  • Solid basswood body
  • Flush-mount, low profile, adjustable bridge
  • Hard maple Tobias Asymmetrical neck
  • Tobias-designed pickups with Tobias SCR single coil neck and Tobias SCT single coil bridge pickups
  • Rosewood fingerboard with a 12 inch fingerboard radius
  • Active Tonexpressor Bass Enhancement Control enables bassists the option of making creative blends
Neck
The Toby Deluxe’s most legendary feature is its hard maple Tobias Asymmetrical Neck profile which is a bolt-on design with recessed bolts and washers for easy adjustments. Tobias basses were among the first to feature an asymmetrical neck, a design where the neck is thinner on the lower side than on the upper side. The asymmetric back shape feels less bulky than standard bass necks allowing for maximum hand comfort.

While these Satin finished necks might feel thinner, there is still sufficient thickness on the upper side to provide for excellent strength, stability and--best of all--deep, rich tone. Your thumb will find easy reference points as your hand glides up and down the fretboard. The neck has a 34 inch scale length for enhanced clarity, a rosewood fingerboard with a 12 inch fingerboard radius and a 1.68 inch nut.

Electronics
The Tobias Toby Deluxe V bass electronics feature classic Tobias-designed pickups with a Tobias SCR single coil in the neck and a Tobias SCT single coil at the bridge. Controls are all-metal Knurled knobs and include Neck Volume, Pickup Blend with center Detent, and Master EQ. An Active Tonexpressor Bass Enhancement Control which enables bassists the option of making creative blends. The Active Tonexpressor is powerful on stage when you need fine adjustments to cut through dense mixes. The Active Tonexpressor uses an easy-to-change 9-volt battery.

So So Good!
General
What is your overall opinion of this product?
Good lightweight Bass for practice and the road. It seems suitable for beginners, all students, novices and professionals. But for an annoying "Hum", it was playable right out of the box. Replacing the preamp-pickup battery with a good alkaline battery SO FAR has cancelled the hum. The pickups are not loud or booming but ok! CONCERNS: Softness of the wood, though it's suppose to be some type of "Pine" wood, seems very soft. One of the screws that hold the rear electronics plate was stripped out of the box. So upgrading, lets say the bridge would be a concern as not certain the wood would stand any extra force or pressure. Some blogposts speak of folks upgrading to Babicz Bridge and Fender or Duncan pickups to this bass. Personally, before doing so, I'd consult with a professional luthier. Overall, for the money, this bass is "good to go" right out of the box.
