The EMG 81TW humbucking pickup takes an EMG classic to a new level.
The dual-mode design allows for maximum flexibility, with the original 81 providing all the crunch and aggressiveness it's famous for and an all new single-coil that features a fatter tone with plenty of punch and clarity. Either mode is accessed through a push/pull pot for versatility. Dual internal preamps, one tuned for single-coil mode and the other for dual-coil mode, give the 81TW two distinct sounds while delivering EMG's well known noise cancelling technology in both modes.
EMG 81TW Includes
- EMG's exclusive Quik-Connect cable (easily connect to other EMG accessories like the SPC Presence Control, EXG Guitar Expander, or the PA2 Preamp Booster)
- push/pull pot
- output jack
- battery clip set
- screws and springs

Perfect
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
Very well made, no problems at all. EMG's support is fantastic too. They offered to make a schematic for me in a CAD program for the setup I was using (they didn't because I figured it out at the last minute). I thought that was awful nice of them (they answer their emails the same day too!).

Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
I've only had them 3 months but I've had no problems. I did, however, have problems installing them over and over again but they stood up to it. I even had to remove and reattach the connections on the solderless wires but they are of good quality (this was my guitar's fault, not the pickups).

General
Your general opinion of this product.
I'm pretty impressed with these. I would've given them 5 stars all around if it wasn't for the price.
|
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
At first I didn't like these as much as I thought I would, but it turned out that I'm just not that good - they're so clear sounding that they unmasked some of my shortcomings as a player that I wasn't quite aware of (bad picking technique).
|
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
super fat, crunchy, 3D. Very strat-like in single coil, but hotter (turn volume down to sound more stratty). I like the active tone also. It seems to have a wider range than a lot of passive tone controls.
|
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
There's no paint on them. The color goes all the way through the plastic.
|
Action
How was the action out of the box?
I haven't got any action because of owning these but then I never play in front of people so that's probably why...
