Subject:Quality Product That Performs Well
Quality: Compared to some other USB MIDI interfaces I considered, I would say the E-MU XMIDI2x2 is very well built. I've only had it for a few weeks but it feels solid and thus far has given me no problems.
Features: As far as I'm concerned, there really aren't any features involved in a USB MIDI interface. I suppose you could consider the number of MIDI input/outputs a feature. In that case, the XMIDI2x2 rates very well considering that you get 2 channels.
Ease of Use: This product has been incredibly easy to use. I'm running Audacity in Linux and Cubase 4 in Windows XP. There was no need to install any drivers or any additional software to get the XMIDI2x2 to work. Both Cubase 4 in Windows and Audacity in Linux had no problems recognizing the MIDI interfaces. I've also had no latency or connectivity issues thus far.
Value: In my opinion, all of the USB MIDI interfaces are overpriced for what they are. Unfortunately, USB MIDI interfaces are a must-have for most of today's computer-based studios. This being the case, I was trying to avoid spending more than I really had to. I considered the M-Audio MIDISport 2x2 but its price was significantly higher than the E-MU XMIDI2x2. Since both had 2 MIDI channels I didn't see the need to spend more on the MIDISport. In addition, the E-MU XMIDI2x2 is a Creative product and I've always had good luck with their stuff in the past.
Appearance: My only gripe here is that I wish all of the MIDI ports (four in total) were placed on the back of the unit instead of two on the front and two on the back. I suppose the reason for the two ports on the front and two ports on the back design is that it reduces the circuit board size, case footprint, and consequentially the overall cost of manufacturing. Not really a big deal, especially if it keeps the cost of the device lower. The LEDs on the front of the unit are great for alerting the user to the power and data transmission status.
Skill Level: Semi-Pro
