With the Inspired by 1964 Texan guitar, Epiphone proudly brings back the Texan combining all the great features of the original with modern updates for today's musician. Since it's introduction in 1958, the Epiphone Texan has been the choice of countless musicians including Paul McCartney, Peter Frampton and Noel Gallagher. In fact, McCartney wrote and performed one of the most recorded and popular songs ever, Yesterday on his 1964 Texan.

Advanced Jumbo (AJ) Shape
Unlike ordinary dreadnoughts, the Texan features a more rounded upper bout and a larger lower bout with a subtle waist. Resembling a bell shape, this leads to a more balanced tone with shimmering highs, deeper lows and clearer mid-range that's perfect for singer/songwriters and other solo performers. Like the original, the new Texan features a premium solid Spruce top with a solid Mahogany back and Mahogany rims. Solid woods resonate beautifully and only improve with age. The neck is solid Mahogany topped with a rosewood fingerboard adorned with the original parallelogram inlays. Hand-fitted and glued into the body, the neck features Epiphone's SlimTaper neck profile that's comfortable and easy to play. Keeping the guitar in tune are original-style but updated 14:1 ratio vintage tuners with classic small oval buttons. Epiphone has even reproduced the original blue rectangular sound hole label from the 1960's for yet another touch of authenticity.

Epiphone adds new features that sets this Texan apart.
First, the saddle has been updated to feature a fixed, compensated saddle. Unlike the original adjustable style, this saddle provides improved tuning accuracy and better string vibration transfer to the top resulting in improved tone and sustain. And for today's player, Epiphone adds Shadow's state-of-the-art Sonic preamp system with the revolutionary under-saddle NanoFlex low-impedance pickup to allow acoustic players to plug in. Discretely mounted inside the sound hole, the Sonic preamp features an easy-access volume control with high and low EQ controls. There's also a phase switch that instantly cuts feedback without affecting tone. The Nanoflex pickup is the only pickup that senses both the vibrations of the strings and the movements of the soundboard simultaneously. The sound is truly acoustic combining accurate body and string tone with percussive attack. It's like having a microphone mixed with an under saddle pickup! Due to active amplification directly at the pickup and 100% shielding of the entire system, there is no signal loss and no hum created. A battery indicator LED turns on when the battery is low and should be replaced within 30 minutes. Powered by two 2032 lithium batteries, the complete system is extremely light and weighs far less than ordinary 9V systems. A premium Shadow output jack is incorporated into the endpin jack and the entire electronic system is covered by Shadow's 5-year worldwide parts and labor limited warranty.

This guitar plays and sounds great for the price. It's as close as you can get to the real thing but for very little money not several thousand dollars.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
This guitar is brand new but seems pretty well made for what it is. Like I said though, I had 3 models come and go via returns to AMS that were 2nds or defective before I hit on this one.
Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
I own an original 1965 Texan, but I try no use it too much. I've tried the Elitist versions of this guitar and thought they were okay and thought I'd see how this model fared. Although I received 3 lemons, the 4th model appears to be the charm. For an Indonesian-made guitar this piece is a remarkably nice guitar and they've recreated each detail of my original guitar down to the finest detail.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
This plays and feels almost identically to my original 1965 Texan. Of course it feels cheaper overall, but it has the same chunky but very narrow neck. The neck is very gritty/not well-dressed, but after some playing that will clear up. The controls are hard to get to as they are small and at the top of the soundhole.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
This is a bright sounding guitar, but it is also very full sounding. It doesn't sound much like a "real" Texan, but it is pretty close... Similar to the recent J-45 guitars by Gibson, in fact.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
The 2nd version of this guitar I received had terrible finish flaws. it was definitely a 2nd. The first and 3rd were nice. The 4th, which I'm keeping, is a bit flamey but very nice overall.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
Terrible. It was very high and the frets and strings were dirty (on each guitar, actually). The first guitar I ordered had neck issues and the third was simply terrible. The fourth required just a simple setup to get it playing nicely.
