Subject:Higher Quality than the Price Point would Allude To
Quality: I own three other Epiphone guitars, so I was not surprised when I saw the quality of my new Sheraton II, the day it arrived. Perfect fret-work, gorgeous binding work, absolutely flawless finish--and the fingerboard inlays are so precise, you can not feel them at all. The pickups give you such a huge variety of tone--everything from B.B. King's bluesy tone to a nasty, driving Krunch (almost like a Les Paul) and everything in-between! The volume and tone pots are of good quality, and respond nicely. And another nice thing is the way the electronics are wired--with the pickup switch in the center position you can vary the tone and volume IMMENSELY by balancing between BOTH tone pots and volume pots! VERY nice control!
Reliability: I have had the guitar for about three months now, and have played it every single day. Not one problem, other than sore fingers.
Overall: I applaud Gibson for their acheivement in transforming Epiphone from a guitar that only beginners and poor guitar players would buy, to a true, value-packed, high-quality contender! I plan to buy more Epi's in the future! I want one of every model (lol--wish I could afford 'em all)!
Playability and Feel: The only thing about this guitar, as with most Epi's and Gibsons, is the headstock is a bit on the heavy side. Now, personally I like that, because I feel like I have a solid instrument in my fretting had while playing, and the mass helps the tone and sustain a-lot. Others may have to get used to it, personal preference is only relative--right?
Tone: As I mentioned earlier, the tone of the Sheraton II is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! You can go from a sweet, low-down bluesy tone, to a scooped-out, nasty punk metal tone, all the way up to a ballsy Les Paul tone--the sky is the limit with the way that Gibson/Epiphone has set the electronics up! And the sustain goes on for days--what with that solid block of Mahogany they stashed inside(of course, the large mass of the headstock helps it too)!
Finish: I found the finish to be flawless. I got the Vintage Sunburst finish, and there is absolutely, positively, not one blemish on this entire guitar--not even on the neck joint, where so many guitar manufacturers seem to have problems.
Action: The action was OK out of the box. I had a little problem with the saddle retaining spring on the ABR-1 bridge buzzing on the A string--But I do my own setups, and prefer to take the bridge apart and turn the E, A and D string saddles out and turn them around so that the takeoff points are the same as the other strings. So when I put the bridge together, I took a small screwdriver and VERY CAREFULLY pressed the retaining spring down in between each saddle screw, which not only makes the saddles more sturdy and less prone to buzzing, but also keeps the retaining spring from arching up and buzzing on the strings (THANKS for that technique, Dan Earlewine!)
