General
What is your overall opinion of this product?
In my opinion the Fender Blacktop Precision Bass is completely solid and well worth the money. I am not a Fender fan and this is only the second Fender I have owned since I began playing many years ago. I stumbled across this at a music store in Virginia and of all the Fenders I played the Blacktop Precision caught my attention. It was the tone and how quickly I could change it to fit my different playing styles. This in my opinion is one of the best purchases I have made and as much as I love an active bass, this has turned my head. I have played many Fender basses in my search and usually I have walked away disappointed. None have sounded this good.
Quality
What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music?
A Fender is a Fender in my opinion, but they have outdone themselves this time. Simple construction and easy to play right out of the box. I play in a jazz band and took it with me to a gig the day it arrived. I was able to dial in tones I had been searching for for years and was able to clearly hear myself over my buddies. Next run will be my R&B band.
Features
Are the features on the product what you were expecting? What are your favorite features?
It was what I expected in a Fender, but the electronics have made this a sonic beast. and easy to dial in. I was able to go from a deep bass sound to a slap funk sound with one small quick twist of the dial.
Feel
Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
It's not too heavy. The neck was fast and it was extremely easy to make quick adjustments on the fly.
Tone
How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin?
I am not typically a Fender fan, but the tone in my opinion is incredible. The pickups are wonderful; full, loud, expressive and smooth.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
It was exactly as expected.
Value
Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range?
I have no complaints in this area. Normally I go through buyers remorse after I receive my purchase, but I threw away the box after playing the Blacktop last night. For a bass under $500 you can't go wrong.
Playability
How was the action out of the box?
Action was a bit high out of the box and it needs a setup, but it didn't deter me from using it on my gig. I was complimented by my guitarist and drummer on how great it sounded.
