Overall Rating
More than I expected
What is your overall opinion of this product?
I've read allot of reviews and YouTube videos of the JM Strat. All of which were stellar and I was not dispointed. The build and quality are amazing for the price. I like the new website where you can select by serial the exact guitar. I am picky about weight and fingerboard color. So, when it came it was stellar. I really like that a hard case is shipped now with the JM Strats as its more appealing and useful for me. I like my action a little lower - so I did adjust the string height, but that only took a few minutes and I typically end up doing this on any instruement. This is guitar is amazing to look at and plays superb. Not much to not like here - I guess I would have liked the little allen wrench in its own little pouch. Its tiny so I had to search a little for it with the case candy.
What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music?
I was surprised at the quality - it was better than expected. Color is a nicer white in person. As far as genre - I don't think there's any music that can't sound great on this strat.
Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
I picked a lighter strat - and just want to say thanks to American Music for the new site views and ability to select an exact ser#. I like my strats under 8lbs and have 7 other strats to compare this one with. The neck is perfect and aling with the pickups the main reason I purchased a JM model. This is a perfect neck profile for my hand - its not small and not to fat. Its really comfortable and better than I expected. Plus the satin neck finish feels really sweet. Has a nice worn in feel right out of the case. The controls are strat right out of the case - can't get that wrong. A proven design from 1954.
How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin?
The JM wound pickups are one reason many players purchase this guitar. And its right as rain. They provide a nice range and are as good as it can be done. Nice bottom with just the right mids and brightness. I tend to be picku about my strat sound and do not like over-wound pickups - the JMs are one of the most perfect balanced pickups I've played - bar none.
How did the stain or paint job look?
The finish is perfection - I showed it to some freinds and they were wow'd. Its a beuatiful finish job - and assembly. It was seriously perfect - I could not find any flaw on neck or body. Most of my other strats are custom shop heavy relics - which is my prefernce - but, this finish is drop dead perfect and its hard not to want to keep it that way.
Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range?
The JM is a bargain for the $$. I've purchased a Marr Jaguar and GE Tele and they to are incredble guitars. In my view the signature Fenders are all super high quality. I am alwasy pleased.
How was the action out of the box?
The action was set to Fender spec out of the box. But, I like to lower about 1/32" which makes it feel better to me. It took me a few minutes and it felt like righ at home. A great playing strat - with big frets - which feel good and bend is nice even with lower action. No fret outs even after adjusting the height. I gave 4 stars on playablilty only because I had to adjust to my preference - but, for most people I'd call it a 5 since you can just pick it up out of the case and it plays nicely.
