Sound: The clean side is classic Fender,though perhaps not as warm and organic in tone and feel as a 60's vintage blackface Fender Deluxe Reverb.The Deluxe can get quite loud,with the clean channel staying relatively clean until around 3 o'clock on the volume knob.After that,there is modest breakup,which sounds good for blues and older rock tones.The overdrive side has a sweet,clear articulate voicing that reminds me alot of my friend's vintage '59 tweed 4-10 Bassman,at least when he has it cranked.The mid control adds some British bark and bite when turned up to around 1 o'clock,or so.To my ears,lower mid settings tend to lend more of an American overdrive sound.Though there is ample gain on tap,the amp is not really EQ'ed for more modern sounding metal tones.Though I believe that a good EQ in the effects loop would probably yield good results for getting such sounds.To my ears,the overdrive tone/feel sits in the cranked Fender tweed/Mesa Boogie MK series camp. Reliability: I have had it for only a few months,though so far,it's been reliable. Overall: I really like the size,sound and features of the Fender Deluxe VM.At around 40 lbs,it's not too much of a hassle to carry it around to gigs and casual jams.The classic blackface look also adds a touch of class.While the clean side uses a solid-state preamp,the overdrive sides utilizes an additional two stages of gain via a 12AX7A preamp tube.The other 12AX7A is the phase inverter that drives the pair of 6L6 power tubes.The cabinet is made of MDF,though the importtant speaker baffle is made of birch plywood.The speaker is a quality Celestion G12P-80.There is added flexibilty with the extention speaker out.The built-in reverb/delay/chorus are well voiced and easy to adjust to get a good sound from each.The series effects loop adds some welcome flexiblity,and works well with my various delay pedals.The included 4-button footswitch is made of quality metal and the Fender labeled nylon slip cover is also a nice touch.
