Fender Champion 600 Guitar Combo Amplifier

The Fender Champion 600 is a fun, affordable tribute to a rare amp.
The new Champion 600 is a 5-Watt tube amp with a 6-inch speaker and 1950 two-tone looks. They added a higher-gain preamp circuit to let the overdriven tone exceed that of the original, and added a choice of high- or low-gain inputs. Internal speaker jack enables use of a larger speaker cabinet. Only 15 pounds, a great little tube amp for recording or practicing.

Fender Champion 600 Features

  • Tube Preamp and Tube Power Amp: One 12AX7 tube; One 6V6 tube.
  • 5 watts into a 6-inch Special Design speaker.
  • High-gain and low-gain inputs; hotter preamp circuit than the 1950 original for warm natural overdrive when turned up.
  • Single volume control.
  • External speaker output.
  • Brown and blonde vinyl covering; vintage-correct 1950 two-tone cosmetics.
  • Leather strap handle.
  • Red jewel pilot light.

Subject:Big Surprises Come In Little Packages!
Quality: I play in a cover band on keys and guitar - it says to rate myself..haha I ain't no rock star but I consider myself worthy of it if the opprotunity ever arises. On with the review!..I have had this sweet little baby for a week. The the power switch, volume knob, and both inputs are very secure - no tightening here! The lone 12AX7 tube was firmly in place - likewise with the speaker cable. The cosmetics - handle and leather look beautiful. I am not sure if they used real leather but this baby can go in my living room. The best part was hitting the power switch and waiting for the tube to warm up - ahh that smell of a fresh tube!
Reliability: I don't plan on gigging with the amp. Although I am curious as to how it would sound pushing a small cabinet. I have owned a few Fender amps that have not stood up very well - Blues Jr. and 65 Reverb. Tone wise they have always pulled through but I have had issues with jacks, reverb pots, and foot switches. Probably half the problems were because of the equipment getting bounced around. Again, I am not taking this baby anywhere - so it should hold up fine.
Overall: I gave it all 5 stars. It is what it is - a nice 5-watt practice amp. Perfect for my small apartment. The previous reviewer recommended all sorts of mods. In my opinion with all due respect to the previous reviewer, it is fine the way it is if you are just looking to practice jam at home. There are always ways to improve things - I save that for my main rig.
Playability and Feel: Controls are one volume knob that goes to "12" . Easy to get to. There are two input jacks - High and Low.
Tone: Ahhh tone...ok..First I cranked this baby up to 12 and played with my '72 Tele Custom (stock pick-ups hum and single coil) through the High input. It roars and is very responseive to guitar volume and pick attack. Roaring you can get sweet lead tones and some nice thick rhythm tones. Dial guitar volume back down and it cleans up nice. I plugged in my Gibson Les Paul into the Low Input and using the same approach got some really fabulous tones coming out of the humbuckers. Surprisingly enough it cleaned up really nice when backing down on the volume. Both guitars carried nice tone - the only control you will have is via your guitar for this, but you can get a variety of tones from rock, country to nice overdriven rhythm chunk - again it is all in your playing style with these types of amps. I did hook up a TS808 and played around with the same configuration as noted above. It really took the pedal well. Even at lower amp volumes the tone with or without a pedal is sweet.
Finish: Finish is great!
Action: Perfect right out of the box - no issues! AMS does a great job shipping gear!

Subject:Best practice amp my Tele could ask for!
Quality: Very solid, put together well.
Sound: Great Fender tone without ear-shattering, neighbor-off-pissing volume.
Reliability: I've had it for a month.
Overall: This was a deal I couldn't pass up. When AMS put it on sale and tossed in free shipping, it was a no-brainer. Looks, sound, performance all excellent.
Playability and Feel: It feels quite Heavy, Fast and Chunky, given that it has no neck. I tried to get to the controls while playing, but I use both hands when I play guitar, so no.
Tone: Fender tone. A great match to my Telecaster.
Finish: There wasn't any.
Action: Um, good?
