Product Description

Built to Clapton’s own exacting specifications and handmade in the United States, the Fender Eric Clapton EC Vibro Champ Guitar Combo Amplifier is a fascinating variation on the ’57 Champ designed. The EC Vibro Champ has a ’50s-era output tube bias tremolo, which produced a more throbbing pulse than later Fender tremolo circuits, and a switchable power attenuator which reduces speaker output.

Clapton recorded some of his biggest hits with a tweed Champ; a late 1950s practice amp and Fender classic prized by countless pros for its great low-output sound and easy-to-record performance. He still uses one today, and Fender has answered his call for a special model with several distinctive features by introducing the EC Vibro Champ. It’s a must for Clapton fans and guitarists who want the ultimate in low-power tube performance!

Fender Eric Clapton EC Vibro Champ Combo Amp Features

  • Hand-wired all-tube circuitry on eyelet board; premium components throughout
  • Circuit based on late 1950s 5F1 Champ - produces about 5 Watts

Fender EC Series Amps
In a historic collaboration, Fender introduces its first artist signature amplifiers, the EC Series amps bear the name of legendary guitarist Eric Clapton. Built to the exacting specifications of Clapton himself, the three amps, the EC Twinolux, EC Tremolux and EC Vibro-Champ, are fascinating variations on their original '50s-era ancestors, and are Fender’s answer to Eric’s call for special models with distinctive features.

In a historic career now in its sixth decade, Eric Clapton has long been known as one of the world's foremost exponents of classic Fender tweed amp tone, and the three amps bearing his imprint present the pinnacle of personally inspired amp tone for stage and studio alike. Each is a must for Clapton fans and guitarists who want the ultimate in tweed tube amp performance.

I am disapointed!
General
Your general opinion of this product.
I have to put this review into perspective. I have had a '57 tweed Princeton (real, not reissue), a 65 Deluxe Reverb (the real one, not reissue), and now have a '58 tweed Harvard. In addition, I have a THD Bi- Valve, that has a much more musical and adjustable attenuation system. When I ordered this amp, it was with the intent of practicing more, and not disturbing my wife. However, all did not go as planned. My first concern with this amp, is that they don't tell you that there is no way to turn off the cool trem without buying the footswitch. Most amps you can disconnect the feature at the amp, or turn it off at the amp. But neither the Fender, nor the AMS web pages tell you that one must have the footswitch to cancel this effect. That is poor customer service. Secondly, the amp should have more dynamic range with different guitars. I was disappointed with the tone while using humbuckers, just too dark.
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
I really can't say much about this, as I have only had the amp for a few days. I can say that it has poor touch sensitivity compared to my other amps, and other vintage amps that I have owned and gigged with/ recorded with. I wish that this amp would get dirty earlier in the volume scale, and that there was a tone control, as it is too dark sounding for me. It sounded better with single coils than humbuckers, but that is a sign of a flawed design in my estimation.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
As above, I wish this amp had a tone control, and an on of twitch for the trem. on the amp itself. Really? one must have a footswitch for a 5 watt amp? Or even more silly, a footswitch for a 11/4 watt amp.? Come on, most likely, people will not be using this amp on stage. So why not just have an on off switch on the amp for the trem.?
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
This amp is a bit too dark in my opinion. It sounds much better with single coil pick-ups than it does with Humbuckers. I see this as a serious design flaw.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
I couldn't get the trem to turn off, as I didn't order the foot switch. Neither the fender, nor AMS web Page say that one needs to by this footswitch to turn the effect off. This is a pain in the a.--.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
The tweed looks great. The tube panel set up looks well done.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
Can't say, as I have only had the Amp for a few days.
