Fender FM52E Acoustic Electric Mandolin

Never let those big jumbo acoustics walk over you again! This "A Style" mandolin fetures a single coil pickup with volume and tone controls. A spruce top, nato neck, back and sides and rosewood fingerboard bridge complete the appointments on this affordable instrument. Founded in 1946, Fender Musical Instruments Corporation has been an American icon for over 50 years. In that time, Fender’s contribution to the evolving sound of contemporary music has been global and continuous. By introducing the first commercially viable solidbody electric guitar, the first electric bass and countless classic amplifiers, Fender musical instruments have left their mark on jazz, blues, country, rock and many other styles of popular music.

Subject:The FM52E - A Fair and Balanced Review
Overall: This is a nice looking instrument. It has a comfortable, solid feel, and no rattles! When I initially tuned it up, the first thing I noticed was that the G and D strings lacked the dynamics of the single wired A and E strings. This is to be expected to some extent with coiled strings, but when jumping back and forth between string types, the volume and resonance is drastically different. It took a bit of playing to get used to. I'm sure there are plenty of mandolins out there that produce a more dynamic sound on the low end than this one, but they also come with a more dynamic price tag. Another minus is that when I plug it in and use the electric capabilites I have to crank the amp volume up a bit more than I'm used to - the pickup is a little weak. But on the plus side, it still sounds like a mandoline even when plugged in. I have played accoustic/electric guitars that did not fare as well when making the transition. So the overall bluegrass sound is pretty good whether plugged

Overall: A little flat unplugged because of laminate top. I play it at Bluegrass jams and it holds its own with the best of them. Plugged in it is spectacular. Nice quality and super action.

Subject:Best of the cheapies...
Quality: I don't think the overall quality is as good as some of the others in this price range, but it plays a lot better. On mine the ivory colored plastic binding on the edge of the fretboard from the 15th to 18th fret is separated a bit. The bridge is OK but looks really cheap. Does the job though.
Reliability: I can't comment as it is still new.
Overall: The tone and playability of this mando is better thatn anything else in the price range. I compared it to the Ibanez M510E, the Epiphone MM20E, the Alabama ALM 20E, and the Applause MAE148 (which is double the price).
Playability and Feel: All of these cheapies are made in China (likely in the same factory!!), so I can't understand why this one sounds and plays so much nicer. I tried 3-4 of the Fenders and they all sounded as good. Could simply be the setup, although I had to adjust it anyways. The Ibanez was very dull.
Tone: Very bright and lively, all the way up the neck. The pickup sounds good too, but would likely sound a lot better with nickel strings. I did some recording with it and it sounds true.
Finish: OK. The Nato wood is a nice, reddish stain while the top Mahogany is more traditional. Looks good together. The headstock is smooth, no flaws. There are a couple places in the f-holes where you can see that the stain was sprayed on and they missed a bit alond the inside egdes.
Action: Action was very good, although the bridge is at it's lowest setting. To me, the bridge shouldn't even be adjustable; just a solid piece would be fine and likely more durable.

Subject:all a man (or woman) could want
Overall: I've been playing guitar now for 8 years and I know my way around 6 strings. blues, metal, rock, fingerstyle hey it's all good. Well one day my dad (a 70 year old kentuckian) said I've made up my mind I'm gonna get you a mandolin. I said hey sure why not. Well we went and ordered this little fender that same day. and it just got here a few hours ago. It's great. Great tone and great feel and u can plug it in and it sounds great then too. I'm well on my way to sounding like the guy from nickle creek. This ones a bargain folks.
