FXPansion GURU FAQ
Who is behind GURU?
GURU was conceptualized by Link and Steve at Devine Machine. They've been friends of ours for a long time - Steve was also one of the creators of the BFD concept, and recorded the sound libraries for BFD and XFL. When we first saw the prototype of GURU, the FXpansion team immediately recognized its potential as a powerful and integrated beat box which put ease-of-use and musicality above conventional product categories and pigeon-holes.
Since then, it has undergone major development at FXpansion and Devine Machine, incorporating advanced technologies from current and as-yet-unreleased FXpansion products, and best-in-class content from our friends and allies across the industry. We've turned our experience with BFD and DR-008 towards making GURU a truly killer drum machine suitable for all dance, urban and electronic styles, and any situation that demands the kind of speedy programmability often found in hardware drum machines yet so often missing in the software world.
DR-008, BFD, Devine Machine or GURU - how do I choose?
They're all about drums, of course.. yet all different and, in many ways, complementary.
GURU is the one for you if you're working with dance, urban or electronic styles of music, and want a tool that's fast, musical and has excellent sequencing and live jamming capabilities. Its sampling capabilities are broadly equivalent to those of DR-008, but it's the onboard sequencer that really takes it to the next level - we set out to make the best tool possible for building beats.
GURU is easy enough for almost anyone to grasp in minutes - Computer Science degree not required - yet powerful enough that few will feel limited or unsatisfied. GURU is for those who want the convenience of loops without the inflexibility.
In designing GURU, we looked at all the world's great hardware beatboxes, and built something that would work in an equivalent way in the software domain - the best of all beatboxes.
Will GURU import DR-008 or BFD kits?
To some extent. GURU has only 16 pads and lacks VA synthesis capabilities - as such, DR-008 kits cannot be fully imported. However, we will be making a conversion tool available allowing you to convert your sample-based DR-008 kits to GURU format a whole folder at a time.
GURU cannot import BFD's huge multi channel kits - however, it does ship with a variety of stereo acoustic kits based on the BFD library.
What plug-in formats does GURU come in?
GURU comes as standalone, Audio Units, VST, RTAS, DXi and as a ReWire device. It's compatible with all major sound cards and host applications.

How does GURU compare to...?
- Drum Samplers: GURU is a drum sampler, and its voice architecture and kit browsing capabilities are equivalent to the best available.
While it has 128 multisample slots in total, these are allocated across the eight engines - unlike conventional drum samplers which offer 40+ on a single page.
- Loop Slicers: GURU is a loop slicer, with slicing accuracy equivalent to the best in the market and convenience second-to-none. It has a unique automatic beatslicing tool called autodetect, which will do all leg-work for you in a second, it will detect the bass drums, the snares the hi hats and others and put them on the right pads!
However, the slicing capabilities are very much intended as a tool for bringing audio in to GURU itself.. it's not optimized for exporting individual sliced to your host or hardware sampler.
- Beat Boxes: GURU is a beat box, its pattern sequencer is as fast, powerful and easy to use as any out there. Its sophisticated quick-preview options, slicing, powerful voice architecture, great-sounding built-in effects and intelligent loop-to-score and timing-extraction take it further than any other.
- Loop Library Players: GURU is a loop library player, it comes with a huge library of excellent-quality, ready-to-use audio loops covering a huge amount of musical ground, and a fast, integrated browser to give you quick and convenient access to the factory library and any other loops you might have; its system of Engines allows you to quickly build your own compositions by layering parts together. But there's more:- the intelligent hit-classification system means that you can, with just a couple of clicks, extract the sounds from one loop and apply them to the score of another, with the timing feel of a third. Plus, the matrix-based editing system makes it just as easy to customize imported loops and make them your own, without ever leaving the speed, convenience and cross-host compatibility of the GURU environment.
Will there be a demo version?
A downloadable demo version is planned, so you can experience the power of GURU for yourself.
What kind of copy protection does GURU use?
A simple serial number, and the knowledge that every time you use warez, God kills a kitten. For all our sakes, please, THINK OF THE KITTENS!
Pirated serial numbers and cracked copies will be denied registration, updates, tech support and bonus content downloads. Use of pirated software may lead to system instability and leaves you liable to legal action being taken against you. Don't say we didn't warn you.
What else does GURU come with?
GURU comes with over 2 Gigabytes of ready-to-use content -- drum kits, audio loops and pattern banks covering a wide variety of musical styles.
GURU's content has been developed by some of the best in the business: 8 Bit Audio, Gearshift, G-Force, Groove Criminals, Nu Skool Breakz, Q Up Arts, Set Creative, Wizoo, Yellow Tools.
GURU also comes with a printed reference manual, and extensive tutorial videos will be made available.
