Product Description

The Gibson Les Paul Bass Guitar has been a favorite among both bass players and Gibson fans for its great look and tone. This bass packs a pair of chrome covered Thunderbird Bass pickups for a full, punchy tone that is very distinct. The Mahogany body and carved Maple top, Mahogany rounded 50s neck and Rosewood fingerboard provide the same powerful tonewood combination as the 6-string Les Paul. Gibson USA has created a true masterpiece in the Les Paul Bass, and it’s definitely worth checking out!

Gibson Les Paul Bass Guitar Features

  • Mahogany body with solid carved maple top
  • Mahogany neck with rounded '50s profile
  • Bound Rosewood fingerboard with trapezoid inlays
  • Two Thunderbird Bass pickups in the neck and bridge positions
  • Grover with Shamrock tuners bass tuners with 20:1 ratio
The Les Paul Standard Bass is rooted in the classic tonewood combination of a mahogany body with solid carved maple top. Together, these woods offer outstanding tonal depth and richness from the mahogany, with superb clarity and ‘snap’ from the maple. Gibson’s strategic placement of several tone chambers enhances resonance while also reducing the Les Paul Bass’s overall weight.

The glued-in solid-mahogany neck is cut to the quarter-sawn grain orientation for improved strength and the optimum transfer of resonance between neck and body. The neck is carved to a comfortably rounded ’50s profile, and topped with a one-piece, Grade-A rosewood fingerboard with traditional trapezoid inlays and 20 medium-jumbo frets. The bass has a PLEK-cut Corian nut, and, to further maximize vibrational energy, Gibson includes its legendary Tune-o-matic bridge and stud-mounted stopbar tailpiece, arguably the most storied hardware combination in the history of the electric guitar, adapted here for the bass.

Two of Gibson USA’s powerful Thunderbird Bass pickups are made with ceramic magnets for enhanced punch and clarity, to pull everything from a solid, low rumble to sweet, musical higher tones from Les Paul Bass, all with outstanding fidelity and clarity. Individual volume and tone controls and a three-way switch offer a wide range of tones.

Finally, a set of highly efficient Grover bass tuners with a 20:1 gear ratio offer optimum tuning smoothness and precision. Add it up, and the Les Paul Standard Bass is a powerful yet classy performer, whatever your genre of music.

An Excellent Bass
What is your overall opinion of this product?
I wanted a bass that could cover a lot of bases, and quite frankly would be different from every Fender or Fender wannabe bass. This is it. The flexibility in terms of tone is amazing. I can get an almost Hofner thump or Rick ring, as well as the classic Gibson or Fender sound.
What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music?
Exceptional quality. Gibson has come through again.
Are the features on the product what you were expecting? What are your favorite features?
My favorite feature of this bass is I can get almost any tone I want.
Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
It is not the lightest bass, but it is well balanced with no neck dive. The neck is described as 50's round, but it really feels like a cross between a Gibson 50's and 60's neck. Very comfortable. The controls are classic Gibson and thus very easy to reach.
How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin?
I changed the strings to Rotosound round wounds, not because the strings that came on it were bad, but simply because I have always loved the sound of round wounds. This bass can go from "dark and smooth" to "bright and snappy" and one can get that classic Gibson snarl if you will.
How did the stain or paint job look?
Absolutely perfect. Not a flaw anywhere I could find.
Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range?
I picked this up for just a wee more than a 1000 from AMS, and I believe I got a bass that could easily command significantly more; particularly when one factors in that it is Made in the USA and has a nitro finish.
How was the action out of the box?
