Overall Rating
A real kicj in the ars
What is your overall opinion of this product?
As a newbie whom never owned a guitar until 58 years old. I purchased a so called starter bass. And almost lost interest because there was no thump or energy in the bass or small amp. Then I met this Thunderbird IV. Together with an Ampeg BA150HP. There is a new fire in the old man. It is like the old hormones kicking in again.
What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music?
This bass is beautiful. From the headstock to the cable plug. This Bass screams Gibson love and quality.
Are the features on the product what you were expecting? What are your favorite features?
The old time simpleness of this bass is its best feature. Adjust your pickups and tone and play.
Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
For an all wood bass this T Bird is a lot lighter than I thought it would be. About half the weight that the case that comes with it is. I tried a few basses with P style necks. Having short dummy arthritic fingers. I can travel the neck and keep time better than I thought I ever could with this Thunderbird.
How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin?
If you like classic rock and blues. You will not be disappointed here.
How did the stain or paint job look?
The finish is just right. Polished but not overkill. So smooth it looks like you can blow the fingerprints off of it.
Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range?
As a new player that tried so called entry level basses. And almost Gave up on playing because of the sounds I was getting. I feel that the best value for someone just starting out is a quality upper mid level guitar. You will sound better and thus be able to keep up the enthusiasm. If things don't work out. You have a great instrument to sell. And don't have to feel guilty about dumping a piece of crap off on someone else.
How was the action out of the box?
I am not a setup wiz. But if you can take a guitar out of the box. Tune it. And then sound like Geezer Butler. That works for me.
