Product Description

The Gibson Nancy Wilson Nighthawk Standard Electric Guitar is a beautifully figured, tonally versatile and expertly crafted instrument recognizing the achievements and career of Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson. Nancy has long been a fan of the Nighthawk and this variation is one of the most elegant ever produced. Gibson USA gives this axe a highly figured Grade-AAA maple top dressed in a high-gloss nitrocellulose finish with Cherry back and neck, and a commemorative ‘Fanatic’ truss-rod cover.

All the distinctive ingredients that made the Nighthawk stand out initially are in the Nancy Wilson Nighthawk Standard, including the 25.5 inch scale length for defined lows and highs, comfortable body contours, through-body stringing and the unique Nighthawk bridge. Gibson pairs a Nighthawk Mini-humbucker and Nighthawk Lead humbucker, with five-way switching for a wide range of tones.

Gibson Nancy Wilson Nighthawk Standard Features

  • Mahogany body with highly figured Grade-AAA maple top
  • Mahogany neck with comfortably rounded profile
  • Bound rosewood fingerboard with parallelogram inlays
  • Split-coil Nighthawk Mini-Humbucker and Nighthawk Lead Humbucker pickups in the neck and bridge positions
  • Gold-plated Nighthawk string-through bridge
  • Vintage-style ‘Gibson Deluxe’ tuners with 14:1 tuning ratio
Body and Neck
The mahogany body of the Nancy Wilson Nighthawk Standard follows the Nighthawk’s stylized take on Gibson’s legendary Les Paul, with a deeper cutaway, a ribcage contour for enhanced playing comfort, and a longer scale length for a broader voice. Its top is made from beautifully figured Grade-AAA maple.

A solid, quarter-sawn mahogany neck with a 25.5 inch scale length is glued into the body and carved in a comfortably rounded profile. The guitar has a bound fingerboard made from solid rosewood, inlaid with parallelogram position markers. A Corian nut cut on Gibson’s computer-controlled PLEK helps to ensure optimum sustain and precise intonation.

Pickups and Electronics
The Nancy Wilson Nighthawk Standard has incredible versatility thanks to a Nighthawk Mini-Humbucker in the neck for a rich, throaty growl and a Nighthawk Lead Humbucker in the bridge which is primed for everything from mammoth crunch to articulate, singing lead tones, yet you merely have to flip the five-way selector switch to tap brighter single-coil sounds, and a range of other tones. Master tone and volume controls make for easy on-the-fly adjustments.

Hardware and Plastics
The heart of the Gibson Nancy Wilson Nighthawk Standard’s superb resonance and sustain is found in its through-body stringing and rock-solid Nighthawk bridge. The bridge, strap buttons, and vintage-style ‘Gibson Deluxe’ tuners are all gold plated, as are the pickup’s mounting rings and neck pickup cover. Amber ‘top-hat’ knobs lend an air of Gibson tradition, there’s a commemorative truss-rod cover hot stamped with ‘Fanatic’.

Nancy Wilson
From the smash early success of 1975’s Dreamboat Annie to contemporary hits launched by her much-applauded return to the band in more recent years, Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson has been the cornerstone of many of rock’s most enduring songs, and the architect of a myriad timeless riffs. She has long been a fan of one of Gibson’s more powerful ‘modern alternatives’ too—and to recognize the union of artist and instrument, Gibson USA introduces the Nancy Wilson Nighthawk Standard, an elegant variation on a contemporary classic.

What is your overall opinion of this product?
This iteration of the Nighthawk is just right. I think the combo of the sweet mini hum and burstbucker is great, esp with the coil taps. I took a risk ordering this one from dent and scratch and as you all know they can't tell you a thing about what damage had been done. For the discount I got I expected a gash bent tuners non working electronics or even no case. When I got the box open there was a case with maybe one small imperfection on it. With one eye closed I opened the case and began to inspect. I found nothing wrong with the electronics or general finish. Someone turkey didn't know how to adjust the truss rod and it was slack with a huge bow and the the truss rod cover had a crack by the nut screw. That's it! In 5 minutes the neck was straight and she was even well intonated. I own many Gibsons, Fenders, PRSs and Taylors so I have plenty of fine axes to compare this NW Nighthawk to and I think it's in top 3 for tone playability/comfort and looks!
Quality
What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music?
I think Gibson USA has slipped a bit lately in their finishes. I'm told they produce 400 a day so the lacquer doesn't have a chance to cure and inspections are so so. That said this Nighthawk is about an 7 or 8 of 10 for finish, all else is perfect. I was hoping for a different sound from the 2 hums and they are a real nice change. Unique from the 57s and noiseless single coils I use. The mini is everything I hoped for and the tapped burstbucker has a cool bite. Overall it has a nice bluesy growl which is brighter than I expected thru a Blues Deluxe. Can't wait to crank it thru the Boogie! Seems pretty versitle.
Feel
Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Now with neck straight and the action just right it players similar to my LP Studio Deluxe and is nice with the slide. Feels like a Gibstone!
Value
