Gibson Flying V Electric Guitar; Long live the V!
In 1958, Gibson put forth new design ideas and the V has since been a mainstay for the company because it is loved by guitarists everywhere. Deemed futuristic when it first hit the market, this guitar has been revered in the hands of many legendary players. The guitar here is a slightly more modern take on the classic V design, but it still keeps the vintage vibe alive in the hearts of its players.
Gibson Flying V Electric Guitar Features
- Mahogany body
- Rounded mahogany neck
- Granadillo Fingerboard
- Pearloid dots inlays
- 496R and 500T humbucking pickups
- Chrome hardware
No matter what, the Flying V will always be considered a vintage guitar. That's because it's so strongly associated with those original 1958 designs. Put on a Flying V and It's like climbing in a time machine. The Flying V features a mahogany body, neck and chrome hardware.
Rounded Neck Profile
Some Gibsons had huge mahogany necks, but by 1960 the company made a number of modifications until those early '60s necks became among the fastest available. The rounded neck profile of the 1968 V is one favored by many of today's top players. You can move up and down the neck at blazing speeds, but the fingerboard still has that warm, classic Gibson feel, allowing easy access to the upper frets so you can really dig into your solos. It also sounds great when grabbing big fat power chords. The pearloid dots complete the vintage look.
496R and 500T Humbuckers
Historically, Gibson has long been associated with the dark, punchy tone of the humbucking pickup with its fat low end and crunchy, complex midrange. The '68 V carries on that tradition with two scorching hot humbuckers with ceramic magnets (a 496R in the neck position and a 500T in the bridge position). Some players (Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page to name a few) felt that by removing the covers, humbuckers were louder and had more top end.

I think quality from Gibson is slipping.
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
Overall quality good...not like it like in the past.

Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
Time will tell.

Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
I have a 1980 Explorer 2, made excellent, finish grade A. Little E string snapped off the nut...had to re-cut the nut.
|
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Neck feels excellent; however, does not feel comfortable while sitting (V shape) slides off lap.
|
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
It's the bomb!
|
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Gibson did a poor job where the neck meets the body...looks like it was welded on.
|
Action
How was the action out of the box?
Plays well out of the box; however, a little adjustment to the string height makes a difference.

Pure Rock Machine!
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Powerful and punchy with a good amount of growl! The tonewoods are the best for that meaty rock n roll sound and match perfectly with these pickups. Some people think these pickups are too hot or are one-trick-ponies but I have them in my SG and Explorer besides this guitar and I love them. I can achieve any sound I want from blues to classic rock to full-on heavy metal with just a little adjustment from the volume control.

Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
The finish was flawless and the guitar is really a work of art!
|
Action
How was the action out of the box?
Played great right out of the box! I was a bit concerned at first glance that the bridge & tailpiece looked to be set too high but when I played it was amazing how good it was. I will probably still have my own setup done, as any self-respecting guitarist should, but still I can't complain for the setup is very good right out of the box.

Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
This guitar appears to be made just as well as all of my other Gibsons, which is why I keep coming back. Nothing beats their quality and tone.
|
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
Too early to tell but I'm sure it will hold up just as well as the other Gibsons I have.

Beautiful guitar, excellent craftsmanship, and tone that makes you wake up and take notice!
|
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
The guitar has a great feel to it. It is well balanced and feels great, right in between an SG and Explorer, weight-wise. I was skeptical about whether I would like the fretboard or not since they are no longer making it with an ebony or rosewood fretboard. However, despite that you can visually tell it's a different material, the fretboard feels amazing! It has a feel that is somewhat like rosewood but with the smoothness similar to ebony; and the tone is all there, it may actually add to the sound something that rosewood lacks. I did have to lower the height of the pickups though in order to maximize the tone and sustain this baby is capable of.
