The Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Electric Guitar from Gibson USA takes the legendary axe into a whole new dimension. With an ergonomic new fingerboard radius and incredibly versatile pickup switching functions while still embodying everything that made the Standard legendary, the 2012 Gibson Les Paul Standard plain top is an incredible guitar that can take on any task you throw at it!

Two Gibson BurstBucker Pro pickups are routed through switching that provides humbucking, low-noise single coil, out-of-phase, and direct-through tones, in addition to the usual options. And just like the gorgeous Les Paul Standards of 1958-60, the 2012 Gibson Les Paul Standard achieves all this while looking great, too, with a standard maple top beneath a gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish.

Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Electric Guitar Features
  • Solid Mahogany body with standard Maple top
  • Mahogany neck with compound radius Rosewood fingerboard and asymmetrical SlimTaper profile
  • BurstBucker Pro Rhythm and BurstBucker Pro Lead pickups in the neck and bridge
  • TonePros Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece
  • Grover Locking kidney tuners with 18:1 tuning ratio
Body
The 2012 Les Paul Standard plain top is crafted with all the classic ingredients that helped make the Les Paul Standard a legend over the past 54 years. A carved maple top contributes clarity and sustain, while a mahogany body adds depth and richness and new modern weight relief enhances resonance and reduces weight.

Neck
A solid one-piece, quarter-sawn mahogany neck is glued in with a traditional mortis and tenon joint, and carved in the popular asymmetrical SlimTaper profile that first helped make Les Pauls the fastest players on earth back in 1960. But while the rosewood fingerboard looks traditional, its dimensions feel entirely more comfortable in the hand thanks to a compound radius that is 10 inches at the nut for easy chording, and increases to 16 inches at the end of the board, for superbly breezy lead playing and bending higher up the neck.

Traditional acrylic trapezoid markers further maintain the traditional look of the 2012 Gibson Les Paul Standard, echoed by the mother-of-pearl headstock logo and gold ‘Les Paul Model’ silkscreen, while a 17-degree back-angled headstock and a PLEK-cut Corian nut aid in sustain and resonance.

Pickups and Electronics
A Gibson BurstBucker Pro Rhythm and BurstBucker Pro Lead pickup are routed through push/pull switches hidden in all four control knobs to provide the most versatile wiring package ever loaded into a Les Paul Standard. Pop up either pickup’s volume control to access a frequency tuned coil tap for a fatter single coil tone and better output balance, with hum canceling when both pickups are combined, and low-noise operation when used individually.

Lifting the neck pickup’s tone control reverses the phase of the neck pickup. This yields out-of-phase tones when the pickups are combined in either humbucking or single coil mode. Additionally, when the neck pickup is in single coil mode, the phase switch can be used to determine which coil is on (up for outer and down for inner coil).

Finally, the bridge pickup’s tone control offers Gibson’s Pure Bypass setting, providing a preset ‘lead mode’ that routes the bridge pickup straight to the output jack at full output and brightness, bypassing the volume and tone controls entirely, for instant snarl and wail when you need it in either humbucking or single-coil mode.

Combined with the traditional three-way pickup selector, these switches yield an unprecedented number of tonal options on the 2012 Les Paul Standard, while all the fat, rich, singing Gibson Les Paul Standard tone that originally made this guitar famous is still there in spades.

Hardware
Top the 2012 Gibson Les Paul Standard plain top off with Grover Locking Kidney tuners, a TonePros tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, and a traditional cream pickguard in the case should you decide to mount it, and the Les Paul Standard is undoubtedly the most versatile, and one of the best looking, Les Pauls ever to emerge from Gibson USA.

Les Paul Standard
Ever since PAF humbuckers met flamed-maple top in 1958, the Les Paul Standard has been revered among players for its unparalleled heights of tone and playability, as well as its sultry looks. The guitar took on iconic status in the hands of players such as Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, Jimmy Page, Paul Kossoff, Slash, Zakk Wylde, and countless others.

How was the action out of the box?
Had to lower the action just a bit but the neck is just right and one big thing that I don't think is mentioned in the specs is it has a LOCKING bridge and stopbar. That is a BIG plus and seems to add so much more sustain.
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
This is exactly what the standard should be. Being the flagship of the Gibson les paul models this jewel has every option you could want minus strap locks but hey they cost about 13.00 to 20.00. I can live with that.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
4 weeks so far so good. This is my 5th gibson over the last few years and I have no worries on it not holding up.
Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
Well put together (of course) although this was my third one mailed from AMS. First 2 had small issues with finish and I'm just picking when paying this much.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Since I have a classic custom and have owned other 60's necked pauls and 50's necks the neck on this one feels in between a 50's and 60's neck. Its just the right weight too. I did notice the first one I was sent was quite light and this one feels like a normal weighted les paul. The coil taps and controls all work flawlessly.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Thats the beautiful thing about this axe,you can have bright, snappy and dark all in one. Nothing but smiles everytime I experiment with the controls.
