’50s Rounded Neck Profile
No guitar neck profiles are more distinguishable than the neck profiles employed on the Gibson models of today. The more traditional ’50s neck profile—found on the Les Paul Studio—is the thicker, rounder profile, emulating the neck shapes of the iconic 1958 and 1959 Les Paul Standards. The neck is machined in Gibson’s rough mill using wood shapers to make the initial cuts. But once the fingerboard gets glued on, the rest—including the final sanding—is done by hand. That means there are no two necks with the exact same dimensions. So while it still has the basic characteristics of its respective profile, each neck will be slightly different, with a distinct but traditional feel.

Gibson’s 490R and 498T Pickups
The mid to late 1960s saw the emergence of a very different type of music coming from the clubs of England. This new genre’s players were demanding more powerful amplifiers with increased volume outputs to satisfy their sonic explorations. This led to a call for a more versatile pickup, and Gibson answered the call with the 490T and 490R pickups (“T” for treble, and “R” for rhythm), humbuckers with the tonal characteristics of an original PAF, but with a slight increase in upper mid-range response. The Gibson 498T bridge pickup is the 490’s ideal complement. Taking the 490 one step further, the 498 swaps the Alnico II magnet to an Alnico V, thus making it slightly hotter with emphasis on mid-ranges and highs. The pole pieces on the 498T are also aligned a little further apart to accommodate the spacing of the strings at the bridge, which is different than the spacing of the strings at the neck.

22-Fret Rosewood Fingerboard
Rosewood has always graced the fingerboards of the world’s finest stringed instruments, including many of today’s Gibsons. The fingerboards on Gibson’s Les Paul Studios are constructed from the highest grade rosewood on the planet. Personally inspected and qualified by Gibson’s team of skilled wood experts before they enter the factories to be fitted onto the neck of the Les Paul Studio. The resilience of this dense and durable wood makes these fingerboards extremely balanced and stable, and gives each chord and note unparalleled clarity and bite. The 12-inch radius of the fingerboard provides smooth note bending capabilities and eliminates “dead” or “choked out” notes, common occurrences on fingerboards with lesser radiuses.

Mahogany Back and Maple Top
There isn’t anything more critical than the marriage of the Les Paul’s mahogany back with a maple cap, as well as the regimen involved in selecting the right wood and the formula to dry it out. First, the wood is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson’s team of skilled wood experts before it enters the Gibson factories. These onsite inspectors also ensure that the plain maple comes from corporations adhering to the forest-saving standards of the Rainforest Alliance, of which Gibson is a proud member and sponsor. Inside the Gibson factories, humidity is maintained at 45 percent, and the temperature at 70 degrees. This ensures all woods are dried to a level of “equilibrium,” where the moisture content does not change during the manufacturing process. This guarantees tight-fitting joints and no expansion, and controls the shrinkage and warping of the woods, in addition to reducing the weight. It also improves the woods’ machinability and finishing properties, and adherence to glue. Consistent moisture content means that a Gibson guitar will respond evenly to temperature and humidity changes long after it leaves the factory.

Chambered Body
There’s something about playing a guitar with perfect tone, balance, and weight. One of the ways the expert craftsmen at Gibson USA achieve this equilibrium is by carving carefully mapped-out chambers in the Les Paul’s solid mahogany back using a Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) router before the maple top is glued on. The positioning of the routes was established after careful examination of the resonant characteristics of the Les Paul. Gibson approached this process with the awareness that every change to the formula would have repercussions on the instrument’s sound. So, in addition to relieving the stress on a player’s back and shoulder, these lighter Gibson guitars also enhance the tone palette in a manner unique only to these guitars. The results are comfortable, lightweight guitars that are acoustically louder, with increased sustain and resonance.

Subject:Looks like an LP-Sounds like an LP-Must be an LP
Quality: I've had it for 3 weeks and I don't have any complaints. Treat it right and it will last a lifetime.
Sound: Definitely a Les Paul tone. With the stock Burstbucker Pro pups it has the LP growl that no other guitar can match. The neck pup has a warm rhythm tone and the bridge pup sounds like it wants to jump out and bite. Great for a solo. The 2 together will give you both tones and responds to how soft or hard you you pick.
Reliability: It's a Gibson Les Paul....'nuff said
Overall: It's a nice guitar. Looks way better then the pics
Playability and Feel: I am really amazed on how light this is. I also have an ash strat and it is heavier then the LP. Back in '75 I bought an LP goldtop and I had to sell it because it was too heavy. I have a bad back so a heavy guitar won't work for me. This LP is very comfortable.
Tone: Pretty good range of tones. This guitar really responds to my picking attack and that's great because I can control much of the tone that way
Finish: Nice color. I have the worn cherry version and I have no complaints. It looks kind of cool actually.
Action: The action was a little high for how I play but it is easily adjustable. I've been a strat player for almost 40 years so the neck felt way different then what I'm used to but within a couple of days it felt like I had it for years.

Subject:Easily the Best Value Out There!
Quality: Very Well-made guitar. I believe that it will last generations, if not subjected to abuse.
Sound: It is a True Les Paul: Gutsy, Gritty, warm, bluesy, soulful. If you want the Les Paul sound, without dropping a few grand, this is your guitar.
Reliability: Haven't had it long enough to say, but I do not forsee any issues. Great American Build Quality!
Overall: This guitar gives you a legendary guitar on a shoe-string Budget! Plays, great, sounds great, and has a nice woody feel to it. Doesn't feel cheap and plastic. The weight relief will benefit those who need a lighter guitar, but do not want to skimp on tone.
Playability and Feel: Lighter than expected, great playbility (the neck is Awesome. This is a true to spec Les in every Way. If you are familiar with the Les setup, then it needs no explaination.
Tone: Traditional Les Paul sound. You can get any tone imaginable out of this guitar, with the right gear. The tone is amazing whether chording, or lead playing.
Finish: Obviously it is what it is. I chose the Worn Brown and for me it is fine. Again, all of the bells and Whistles cost a few grand on a Les. I wanted a guitar to play, not stare at and this fits the bill. A nice looking guitar, none the less.
Action: No Additional set up needed! This guitar was set up with a very nice low action. Perfect for me. It was even in tune when it arrived!

Subject:Value-laden gem from Gibson
Quality: I have only owned this LP for a few weeks, however with a brand such as Gibson, that is why you buy the guitar, for quality. From the few weeks I have had with my LP Studio it is everything I have come to know and trust from Gibson. It is built to perfection and sounds fantastic right out of the box. Set-up is up to your taste, and experience level, so for me I tinkered a little, but found Gibson had it right for my playing style right from the factory. I have owned standards and classic LPs for years and this was an impulse, since I have never owned a studio before. This guitar has the same playability, tone and excellence that higher end models do. It is what it is and it is priced the way it is because you do not get binding, a high-end paint/finish as well as other mostly cosmetic downgrades. I am big on color and finishes so I was unsure from seeing it online, but once I have had it in my hands it still is a beauty.
Reliability: It will, all my previous LPs have and this one is made to last, you can tell simply by playing the first few riffs when you pick it up.
Overall: I am extremely pleased with this purchase of a studio LP as I have been with all my Gibson guitars from previous years and models. It is Gibson through and through and actually more attractive than the photographs show. For the money this is a fantastic guitar for someone looking to upgrade to a professional guitar or a seasoned vet looking for another addition to a collection. I really didn't see myself owning another LP soon with the credit crunch, but with this price it is hard to argue that you would get a better guitar for the price.
Playability and Feel: It feels like a Les Paul, and if you have never played one, it is a one of kind feeling. The neck is faster than I imagined with this being a bare bones model. This is a workhorse guitar that I could easily see being played by a variety of players with a multitude of needs for speed, for raw power, for jazzy smooth tones and more. Typical LP controls, great sound from these humbuckers and a fretboard that makes your fingers feel free to fly.
Tone: The tone is what you would expect from a mapletop-archtop Les Paul and with the 490R and the 498T pickups you can get searing hot tone or mellow and moody tone, never thin always a lush sound, but not to an excess. When I say thin, I mean this studio LP does not have a weak bone in its body. Tone can be clear and bright without being thin and Gibson has it down to a mad science...
Finish: This is the ONLY issue about this guitar. I had always strayed away from the "worn" series because I felt that a couple of hundred more bucks was well worth a nice poly-shiny-pretty finish. As I said above in this review I was pleasantly surprised by how nice my worn cherry looked in person. Sure you aren't going to stun anyone on-stage with this guitar, but I don't think that is the point. It has an earthy, woody feel that isn't tacky or look cheap. I can't vouch for the worn brown, but that did not appeal at all to me when I have seen them in stores or seen them via pictures online...but it is all in the eye of the beholder...
Action: I felt like the action was pretty dead on for me out of the box. It wasn't as low as I would have liked, but that is an easy fix if you know what you are doing. Just a slight adjustment. Everything was simply masterful straight out of the case...
