The Les Paul Axcess Standard from Gibson Custom carries all the elegant styling, fluid body lines and rocking attitude of a classic Les Paul Standard from the golden era of the late 1950s. Upon closer examination, however, the Les Paul Axcess reveals a handful of upgrades; all modifications made in the name of maximum playability and versatility.
Body and Neck
Encounter the clever structural alteration that gives this new model its name by taking the instrument in your hands and running your fingers up the neck. The Axcess sports what looks from the front to be a traditional Les Paul neck joint, yet the neck heel and portions of the back and neck joint at the upper cutaway have been contoured to provide a heelless feel, and an unimpeded reach right up to the 22nd fret. No more stretching against the traditional neck heel to achieve the upper-fret access that your lead style demands, the Axcess gives you that legendary Les Paul playability all the way up the neck, welcoming you to take it right over the top. The one-piece, 24 3/4 inch scale length, mahogany neck features a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearloid trapezoid fingerboard inlays.
To further enhance playing comfort, this smoothly carved neck joint is combined with a belly scarf (aka ribcage contour) that allows the body of the guitar to hug closely to your own body in the playing position without digging in. Add to these contours the Les Paul Axcess’s slightly thinner body, made from weight-relieved mahogany, with a carved maple top available in Iced Tea Burst or Gun Metal Gray finishes and single-ply cream binding on body top, and you’ve got an instrument that is refreshingly light, and a pure joy to play either strapped on, or in a seated position.
Hardware
The most noticeable addition is the Floyd Rose tailpiece, a unit optimized for anything from subtle vibrato wobbles to dramatic, rumbling dive-bombs. On the Les Paul Axcess Standard the vibrato is installed right at Gibson Custom as part of the manufacturing process, which means this potent piece of high-performance hardware interacts seamlessly with the design of the guitar. Partnered with an R4 locking nut, it also guarantees outstanding tuning stability and return-to-pitch accuracy.
496R and 498T Pickups
Beyond all these significant considerations for playing feel, the Axcess is also geared toward optimum tone, as you’d expect from any Gibson Custom creation. Exposed-coil 496R and 498T pickups in the neck and bridge positions — the ceramic 496R provides incredible sustain and definition with no muddiness and the 498T Alnico V is the perfect companion in the bridge position providing a high output with emphasis on mid-range and highs, while a push/pull switch on each volume knob provides coil splitting for each pickups for single coil tones.
These unique tonal combinations excel at delivering everything from singing classic rock lead tones to contemporary crunch to extremes of twang and jangle. Even the pure-nickel wound .10-.46 Gibson Vintage Strings it ships with contribute toward its rich, textured voice. Each instrument also comes with a Gibson Custom hardshell case and certificate of authenticity.

| Quality |
| Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable? |
| It's a custom shop gibson, hand made. Yes I consider it well made.
If you take care of it, it will last forever. |
|
| Reliability |
| How has it stood up over time? |
| Just got it. But all of my gibsons have lasted without any issues. |
|
| Overall |
| Your general opinion of this product. |
| Excellent instrument, still too expensive. |
|
| Playability and Feel |
| How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing? |
| Plays like butter, then neck is fast and not like a baseball bat. The axcess to the higher registers is nice. I never did understand why gibson didn't fix this in the past. |
|
| Tone |
| Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin? |
| The pickups clean up nicely, and snarl at full volume. It has the classic les paul tone. |
|
| Finish |
| How did the stain or paint job look? |
| Finish is very good, but you must take care, it is nitro laquer and is soft. |
|
| Action |
| How was the action out of the box? |
| A little high for my taste out of the box. But a quick adjustment and no problem. intonation was right on, and the plek fret job is excellent. |

| GREAT Les Paul |
| Tone |
| Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin? |
| The pickups sound great. Pretty hot but not muddy. I never use the coil splitters as I'm very much a humbucker fan. |
|
| Finish |
| How did the stain or paint job look? |
| The finish is great. Nitro is the hardest finish to apply, and Gibson has done an admirable job. Gibson is the only company I know of that does nitro exclusively. |
|
| Action |
| How was the action out of the box? |
| The action out of the box was a tad high, but nothing that a little adjustment couldn't fix. Now the action is medium low, enough for me to dig into, but still be able to play fast. |
|
| Quality |
| Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable? |
| This guitar is really well made. As with most nitro finishes, it's not perfect, but I have no complaints. This is also contrary to conventional internet wisdom that Gibson has poor quality control. This is my 4th Gibson, and the ones I've bought recently have been consistently good. |
|
| Reliability |
| How has it stood up over time? |
| I've played it at two gigs so far, and I've had no problems with it. The tuners hold their tune well, and everything is sturdy. Hey, it's a Les Paul!! |
|
| Overall |
| Your general opinion of this product. |
| I love my Axcess stop tail. It is a fantastic guitar. My only minor gripe is that Gibson seems to be using non bookmatched tops on a lot of their guitars these days. Some of the Axcesses I've seen have bookmatched tops, mine is not. But it still looks very cool. |
|
| Playability and Feel |
| How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing? |
| The neck is a nice medium size - not too thick and not super thin. I sometimes accidentally hit the three way toggle when I'm flailing away. But overall it's a pretty easy guitar to play, and I grew up playing Strats! |
