Product Description

Take one look at the Gibson Zoot Suit Les Paul Electric Guitar and it’s clear that it is one of the most distinct and bold guitars ever made by Gibson! Named for the flashy hipster suits of the jazz age, Gibson USA designed this head turning axe by combining traditional Les Paul ingredients with stunning looks from died hardwood. The Les Paul Zoot Suit's extraordinary rainbow-striped appearance is created by dying several layers of thin yet solid birch in brightly contrasting colors before laminating them together to create the hardwood base from which the entire guitar is crafted.

The carving of the body top, the back's ribcage contour, and the headstock's top veneer naturally reveals further layers of color. The birch lends a firm, bright tone, which partners perfectly with the classic pairing of a P-90 single-coil pickup in the neck position and a higher-output 498T humbucker in the bridge. Put it all together and the Zoot Suit Les Paul is a bold piece of Gibson art, which will help you stand out on any stage, both visually and sonically.

Tonewoods
The Zoot Suit's body follows the traditional Les Paul shape, with carved arched top, but is thinner overall and is made from several layers of individually color-died birch hardwood, with an added carved ribcage contour for improved playing comfort. The glued-in neck is also made from several layers of color-died birch, carved to the popular '60s SlimTaper profile, and oriented at a 90-degree rotation from the body woods, to reveal the dramatic stripes at the edges of each layer. This composition also creates an extremely strong, stable neck.

A rugged, dark Richlite fingerboard carries 22 medium-jumbo frets and is built to traditional Gibson specs, including a 24.75 inch scale length, a 1 11/16 inch width across the PLEK-cut Corian nut, and a 12-inch fingerboard radius for smooth, easy bending. Gibson designed this unique axe to be extremely comfortable to play!

Electronics
The Les Paul Zoot Suit is powered up by the versatile pairing of a P-90 pickup in the neck position and a hotter 498T humbucker in the bridge. Gibson makes its P-90s today just as it did when they were introduced in the 1940s, with two genuine Alnico bar magnets and around 10,000 turns of 42 AWG wire for chiming highs, punchy mids, and vintage-styled bite. The 498T humbucker is made with an Alnico V bar magnet and over-wound coils for even more scream and sizzle in the lead position.

Hardware
A Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece lock it all down for resonance and sustain, while quality Grover kidney button tuners give you time-tested efficiency in the tuning department, and knurled chrome dome knobs provide a bright contrast to the guitar's colorful appearance.

A Wonderfully Sounding and Visually Unique Looking Guitar from Gibson.
General
Your general opinion of this product.
The Gibson Les Paul Zoot Suit is a wonderfully playing, unique looking and excellent sounding guitar. The P90 in the neck gives big fat rhythmn and singing lead tones and the 496 in the bridge is hot and nasty but can be reeled in with the volume knob. I am very happy with this guitar with my current jamming rig of Tech 21 Trademark 60 with additional Power Engine and Line 6 Podxt.
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
I don't know how much work goes into making the Zoot Suit guitars but they are works of art. Layer after layer of very thin brightly stained birch is layered one after the other to make the guitar, including the neck. A lot of craftsmanship and thought at the design level went into the design and building of this guitar.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
It's a bright guitar, but it's bright in the upper mids, not in the ice pick zone when using the bridge pickup. The P90 remains creamy at all volume and tone settings. I roll back the volume controls a little - the takes some of the in-your-face bark out of the pickups and makes for a better rhythm sound IMO. Volume up for leads if you like to rip. The middle position is my favorite - you can really dial in different tones with just the two volume knobs and the P90 tone knob in particular.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
The Zoot Suit is an awesome looking guitar. I can't believe the level of work that went into making this, or how the designer even came up with the idea! The thin finish makes for a very organic, "attached" feel when playing. I wish the back showed the same multi-colored layers as the neck, but maybe that would be too much.
