Product Description

Gibson has combined their expert craftsmanship, remarkable tonewoods and a short scale design that is big on sound in the J15! This all new instrument features a Spruce top that is matched with Walnut back and sides. Walnut imparts a tone that many players describe as a blend of rosewood’s clarity and mahogany’s ‘woodiness’. Overall Rating
Playability and Feel
Guitar with a real articulate voice
Your general opinion of this product.
I have lots of guitars and 47 years experience playing guitar, and have the ability to get the best tone out of any guitar. I wanted this guitar due to the walnut body, a tone wood I had not previously owned. This guitar came with a Tusq saddle and 80/20 strings, which combined with the walnut made the tone excessively bright. After changing to a bone saddle, phosphor bronze strings, and ebony bridge pins the tone of the wood really came out with a strong articulate voice. With these changes the guitar makes an excellent guitar for story songs and s singer-songwriter ballads.
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
The setup was spot on right from the box so I didn't have to do any nut tuning or fretwork, which is unusual, and a sign of expert craftsmanship. It is solidly built.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
The short scale is my favorite for easy of playing. The neck thickness and nut width are excellent.
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
It was too bright with the Tusq saddle, 80-20 strings and plastic bridge pins. Tusq saddles prevent the tone of the wood from really coming out, but with the added bone saddle, ebony bridge pins and phosphor bronze strings the walnut really sings with its own articulate voice, which is perfect for single note lead runs and Travis picking.
How was the action out of the box?
The action was spot on right from the box.
How did the stain or paint job look?
The nitrocellulose gloss finish is beautiful, and really brings out the beauty of the wood.
How has it stood up over time?
I have just had it a few days but my Gibson J-100XTRA that I bought from American Musical Supply in 1996 stills plays great, so my experience with Gibson Montana Division is 100% positive.
