Gibson

The Gibson SG Standard P90 Electric Guitar features all the appointments of the Standard model, but is equipped with a pair of authentic P-90 pickups. Finished in hand-sprayed, high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer the SG Standard P90 brings together the features and electronics of two legendary SG models for the first time, and creates a timeless classic in the process.

While the SG Standard's original specs included a pair of humbucking pickups, many players have always loved the hot, raw sound of single-coil P-90 pickups, as found on the SG Special and Junior guitars, which otherwise had more austere features.

Gibson SG Standard P90 Electric Guitar Features
  • Solid Mahogany body with gloss nitro finish
  • Mahogany neck with comfortable, rounded profile
  • Baked Maple fingerboard with acrylic trapezoid inlays
  • Pair of authentic P-90 single-coil pickups in the neck and bridge
  • Vintage-style TonePros tuners with 16:1 tuning ratio
Body
Like the original SGs of the '60s and all of the classic variations since, the Gibson USA SG Standard P90 has a body crafted from solid mahogany in the iconic asymmetrical ‘double-horned’ deep double-cutaway design. A light and supremely resonant wood, mahogany gives this guitar outstanding tonal richness and depth, with plenty of clarity and sustain. Coupled with the SG's characteristic beveled edge the mahogany's light weight also enhances playing comfort.

Neck and Fingerboard
The SG Standard P90’s quarter-sawn mahogany neck is carved to a rounded profile that feels sublimely comfortable in the hand. It is glued into the body with Gibson's acclaimed mortise-and-tennon neck joint, and topped with a baked maple fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets, dressed in vintage cream binding. Acrylic trapezoid fingerboard inlays, a mother-of-pearl headstock logo and holly inlay, a five-ply late-'60s style pickguard, and a black truss-rod cover engraved with ‘SG’ round out this eye-catching package.

Electronics
To take it all into raw and rugged sonic territory, Gibson USA equips the SG Standard P90 with a pair of the authentic P-90 single-coil pickups that help to give this guitar its name. Made just like the originals that were introduced by Gibson way back in 1946, each of these pickups carries a pair of Alnico V bar magnets and is wound with 42 AWG wire for a tone that is meaty and thick, yet clear and articulate, with that characteristic P-90 edge and bite.

Hardware
Your tone is anchored by the classic pairing of a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, with a set of TonePros vintage-style keystone tuners installed at the other side of the PLEK-cut Corian nut. Put it all together, and the Gibson SG Standard P90 is a smoking slab of vintage mojo.

SG
A confirmed classic ever since its arrival in 1961, SGs of various types have been played by Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, Frank Zappa, Robby Krieger, Angus Young, Derek Trucks, Jeff Tweedy, and countless other rock, blues and alternative artists.

Great Quality Guitar for the price
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
Out of the box, the guitar could have been set up much better by the factory. The action was set high, and some strings were fretting out on the lower frets. Some small adjustments, and i got it right where i want it. Wasn't a big issue for me, i usually tweak, and mod, and tweak until i am satified. The neck was set well, everything looks well crafted and assembled.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
I've only had it a few weeks, but it's an American made Gibson. I'm sure it will hold up fine.
General
Your general opinion of this product.
I've owned just about every style of guitar, and i've been on a never ending quest for tone. The sound of the p90's is exactly what i've been looking for. The clarity of single coils, but not as thin. I wanted the SG Classic for a while, but this is a much better quality guitar in my opinion, and with a very nice HSC for practically the same price.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
fast, wide neck. Love the painted finish on the back of the neck. I've always been a Fender guy, i'm not used to such luxuries. No complaints about the baked maple.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Great sound from the P90's. Chords sound amazing. Clarity and tons of sustain.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Nice nitro finish. Being that it is all black, every smudge, pick mark, etc. is going to show. Just something you have to live with.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
Could have been setup much better, but i'm very picky on these things. A few small adjustments and I was in business. The nut could be cut a little deeper.
