The Gibson SG Standard Electric Guitar is a true American icon with tone and feel that makes it a player's guitar. It's more than just a coincidence that mahogany is one of the most prized woods for electric guitar design, and the Gibson SG Standard is arguably the most classic example of the use of this fine tonewood in an instrument that's both nuanced and powerful. Unlike thicker mahogany/maple designs, the SG Standard’s thinner solid-mahogany body offers a considerable reduction on weight, while presenting a warm, rich resonance with lots of harmonic depth and sparkle.
Gibson SG Standard Electric Guitar Features
- Gibson's traditional '50s rounded neck profile
- Solid Mahogany body with nitrocellulose finish
- Hot chrome Gibson 490R and 498T pickups
- 22 Fret Rosewood fingerboard with figured acrylic trapezoid Inlays
- Includes a Gibson hardshell case
The SG Standard guitars's solid mahogany neck is carved to a rounded profile similar to SG's from the mid '60s, for superb in-the-hand comfort and outstanding playability, while it's glued in deep-set, long-tenon neck/body joint and 17-degree back angled headstock team up to provide a transference of neck resonance into the body that’s far superior to other neck designs. Of course, a pair of Alnico-loaded humbuckers was always a big part of the SG's magic, and today's SG Standard brings it on in spades. With Gibson’s popular 490R in the neck position and the slightly hotter 498T in the bridge, the SG Standard gives you everything from bluesy vocal warmth to snarling, wailing aggression, all at the flip of a three-way toggle switch. A stopbar tailpiece provides a rock-solid anchor behind Gibson’s legendary Tune-o-matic bridge, prized for its ability to enhance singing sustain while remaining highly adjustable to perfect your instrument’s intonation.
Sum it all up, and it's a guitar of unrivaled versatility and stunning looks – and a rock beast to be reckoned with. All this, and your SG Standard comes protected in a formfitting Gibson hardshell case, and is covered by Gibson's famous Limited Lifetime Warranty and 24/7/365 customer service. It could just be the bargain of the decade… or the past four.
Body and Finish
A solid mahogany body with beveled edges for added comfort and that distinctive and dangerous dual-horned double-cutaway design are hallmarks of the legendary Gibson SG Standard guitar. The SG Standard's select mahogany components ring with all the depth and richness you’d expect from a classic tonewood, and look great in a nitrocellulose finish.
Neck, Headstock and Fingerboard
The SG Standard is crafted in classic Gibson style with a glued-in long-tenon neck made from solid quarter-sawn mahogany and topped with a rosewood fingerboard. It has an angled headstock for superior resonance, and its rounded mid-'60s profile and 1-11/16 inch wide Corian nut help to make is supremely playable.
Pickups and Electronics
The SG Standard carries two of Gibson's most popular humbucking pickups, a 498T in the bridge position and a 490R in the neck. Both are designed as updated renditions of Gibson's famous PAF humbucker of the late '50s and early '60s, modified for improved versatility, and routed through the classic Gibson four-knob and three-way switch control section.
Hardware
The hardware set on the Gibson SG Standard echoes that worn by SG Standards since the 1960s, and includes Gibson’s hallowed Tune-o-matic bridge, stopbar tailpiece, and vintage-style tuners. A classic of 20th century guitar design, the Tune-o-matic provides excellent resonant coupling, while offering efficient independent adjustment of each saddle for precise intonation.
When it first hit the scene back in 1961, the Gibson SG (short for Solid Guitar) was the most radical design the electric guitar world had witnessed so far, and it still makes a bold statement today. The diverse list of guitar stars that have taken variations of the SG to heart includes Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Sister Rosetta Thorpe, Robbie Krieger, Earl Hooker, George Harrison, John Cipollina, Pete Townshend, Carlos Santana, Tony Iommi, Pete Ham, Mick Taylor, Peter Frampton, Terry Kath, Jerry Garcia, Duane Allman, Glen Buxton, Michael Bruce, Jimmy Page, Frank Zappa, John McLaughlin, Mick Box, Buck Dharma, Gary Rossington, Todd Rundgren, Johnny Guitar Watson, Frank Marino, Link Wray, Angus Young, Rod Price, Barry Goudreau, Don Felder, David St. Hubbins, Johnny Marr, Derek Trucks, Jeff Tweedy, The Edge, Gary Louris, Deryck Whibley, Rivers Cuomo, Andrew Stockdale and Kirk Douglas.
Originally conceived as a modern replacement for the single-cutaway Les Paul Standard (the name it still carried for the first couple years of its existence), the SG had several features that made it perfect for cutting-edge guitarists – all of which remain present in the Gibson USA SG Standard – and it became an iconic rock guitar almost immediately. With its light yet resonant solid-mahogany body and neck, a radical looking double-cutaway design that also yields unprecedented upper-fret access, a rock-solid Tune-o-matic bridge and stoptail pairing, and two meaty humbucking pickups, today's SG Standard guitar is just as sweet a player and as monstrous a tone machine as the guitars that made the name legendary nearly 50 years ago.

| Love It! |
| Quality |
| Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable? |
| I own several Gibsons, this is probably the best finish on any I have owned. Fit & finish on this one is also better. Tuners great, Chrome great. |
|
| Reliability |
| How has it stood up over time? |
| Looked under the hood, has the usual Gibson plug in circuit board. Can't imagine that failing at all, really solid. |
|
| Overall |
| Your general opinion of this product. |
| I have been playing guitar for 42 years and never owned an SG. I just thought it wasn't me. After playing live a few times I realized it's light, plays like butter and can peal the paint of the walls. |
|
| Playability and Feel |
| How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing? |
| My only complaint about Gibson... and I hope they someday get it. Every new Gibson I have purchased is set up like a crossbow... I swear you can shoot arrows with them. The tailpiece is sticking up like a park bench and the bridge is stupid-high. If I was going to use a bow to play it maybe. Didn't have to touch the truss rod on this one but took a little time to drop everything down. If I tried it out in a retail location I would have put it right down. Now that it's set up correctly it plays like a dream. Intonation is right on. |
|
| Tone |
| Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin? |
| I like that it's different from my LP's. It has it's own personality, like a midrange bark to it. The more I play the more I can hear Angus Young without really trying. It's a lot of fun when it's cranked and it also sounds sweet for clean tones. I thought the neck pickup would sound like I was playing under a blanket but it's go a nice full warm sound. It's very versatile. |
|
| Finish |
| How did the stain or paint job look? |
| It's black so it's hard to screw up. A little bit cheesy on the top of the head but you can't see unless it's standing up. |
|
| Action |
| How was the action out of the box? |
| After setting it up properly it played like a dream. I love the neck and the fretwork. |

| Greatest guitar I have ever owned, nothing I have played compares. |
| Playability and Feel |
| How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing? |
| The neck is just a little heavier than other guitars but I have gotten used to it to the point it is normal and other guitars feel "odd" to me now. It is set up just how I like it, very even string response, I use La Bella .009s and best handmade string imo. Very good all around playability. |
|
| Tone |
| Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin? |
| This is one of the most versatile guitars that I have ever played, it has that country sound and can go to full on metal chug, it's responsive enough for jazzy or even funk. |
|
| Finish |
| How did the stain or paint job look? |
| Very nice finish, I was expecting and judging this by the (less expensive) shiny paint, this is a real nitro finish (smells like vanilla for many years) and therefore you can still see the wood grain in it in places. This is actually a good thing and makes a much more rich and soulful sound. |
|
| Action |
| How was the action out of the box? |
| The action out of the box was really good, I took the guitar to my guitar tech and had it setup professionally with my strings and how I like them and even he complimented me on how well built the guitar was. I have let a few people play it and all compliment how well it plays, one obsessed that it was the "best" guitar that he has ever played in his life. |
|
| Quality |
| Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable? |
| Mine is very well made, it is a 2010 model SG Standard in Ebony and everything on it is absolutely exemplary. It is one purchase that I was hesitant about but have never regretted. |
|
| Reliability |
| How has it stood up over time? |
| Have had it for 2+ years now and I have to admit, I am still psychotic about taking care of it, always look for buckles/buttons before I play it and I wipe it down after I play it, everytime. Period. But the fit and finish are top quality, it's a real nitro finish, not the inexpensive poly that I was used to (yes, it is thin enough you can see the wood grains in it, so isn't shiny as glass like the cheaper ones, but that's a good thing). All of the controls still work A1+, everything is smooth and every control on it actually does something that you notice, no magic switches and knobs that you are left wondering what they do. The pickups are crisp, clear, and have the most "feel" of any pickups I have played. One thing I do with a lot of other guitars I have owned is first off replace the pickups into nicer ones. These, if I did that it would be a downgrade. |
|
| Overall |
| Your general opinion of this product. |
| I kind of liked the Gibson SG, to me, the Ebony is very elegant with the contrast of black and chrome with just a little bit of a mean streak. It's super light weight and weighs about the same as my Strat. The tones that you get out of this guitar make it the best all around guitar I have, you can really feel, as well as hear the attack but it's not noisy. It's very responsive and easy to get the nuances when playing. If you play harder, it's notably louder, and vice versa. Gibson has gotten a lot of bad rap in the past few years, they aren't what they used to be, etc. I can tell you, after 2+ years of owning this one, it is the best purchase I have ever made and I would do it over again. It's definitely a great guitar. |
