The Gibson Hummingbird Modern Classic offers an unmatched combination of sound and style.
With the broad tone of its square shoulder body and its bold visual statement, the Hummingbird has been one of Gibson’s most recognizable guitars for over 40 years.
The Hummingbird led the way for an entire family of square shoulder models, and the body style became so popular that it was the only dreadnought shape offered by Gibson in the 1970s. The Hummingbird continues today as the leader of Gibson’s prestigous square shoulder line, which ranges from the fancier Dove to the affordable Songwriter series and includes historic signature models. Includes Gibson hardshell case.
Gibson Hummingbird Features
- Nickel Grover Rotomatic Tuners
- Bone nut and Tusq saddle
- New Big Sky radiused fingerboard edge
- LR Baggs Element electronics
- Premium hardshell case
- Distinctive new labels
Hummingbird - Dreadnought beauty
In 1960 Gibson introduced its first 16 inch wide dreadnought with the extra wide upperbout, known as the square shoulder body shape. To emphasize the importance of these new models, Gibson outfitted them with elaborate ornamentation such as engraved pickguards and multi-layered binding. As discriminating guitarists immediately discovered, underneath the flashy good looks was a solid, high quality guitar.
The New Hummingbird – A Modern Classic
The Gibson Hummingbird brought a subtle new body style and a bold new look to Gibson's dreadnought family. As with the original, the new Hummingbird Modern Classic sports such eye-catching features as a cherry sunburst finish - the first on a Gibson flat-top - double parallelogram fingerboard inlays, multi-layered binding, and a modernized pickguard engraved with hummingbird and blossoms. Further features include a premium Sitka spruce top, solid mahogany back and sides, and a comfortable mahogany neck with radiused rosewood fingerboard . The added active electronics allow you to take that sound anywhere.
L.R. Baggs Element Active Acoustic Pickup System
Gibson Acoustic’s Hummingbird comes equipped with the popular Element Active Acoustic Pickup System from L.R. Baggs, which features a low-profile undersaddle element—or transducer—that’s proven more stable and durable than many standard ribbon-type pickups. Combined with an onboard preamp with an unobtrusive and volume control mounted just inside the soundhole, the Element delivers performance not previously attainable from an undersaddle pickup. Its sleek and effective design removes unnecessary internal components to enhance the coupling between the pickup and the guitar, and improve the sensitivity of the transducer for a robust, lively, and natural acoustic sound with excellent dynamics and delicate high end. The Element works with a standard 9V battery, which is housed inside the guitar in L.R. Bagg’s Battery Bagg.

Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
I find it very easy to play. The action is perfect, and the neck is slimmer than my other guitars.
|
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Definitely Dark and smooth! The first time I plugged it in, the guys in the band all stopped and were amazed at its sound. I've also noticed how it sounds better as time goes by.

Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Everything about the guitar is beautiful. Excellent color. Someone always comments on how awesome it looks whenever I open the case
|
Action
How was the action out of the box?
Action out of the box was perfect. Only issue was the B string had a slight buzz down by the bridge. Took it to the local music store; they tweaked it a little and it's sounded great since.

How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
As best I know. I've never learned to plly a guitar but it i on my adgenda. My father had an early 1960's Hummingbird Gibson that both he and Mother played and I never got tired of listening to it. When Dad died it went to my baby brother, whom some of you may have hear of. He diffently had a unique sound all his own. His name was Ed Yokley of the K.. Blues Band. This is one reason I want to learn to play and shy I'd like a Hummingbird.
