Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
This guy is built like a tank. The knobs are very heavy duty and I bet I could drop this thing on the floor and nothing would happen to it.
Features
What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could?
I like the fact it has the DI option built in. I don't usually record bass/guitar into it, but I like that it has this option.
Ease of Use
How easy is this product to use? How easy is the product to use with other products? Did it take long for you to learn to use this product? Was the manual helpful? How playable do you consider this product to be?
It's fairly easay to use, but it may be a little awkward for people who are used to working with other Pres. After you get the hang of it though, it is actually quite simple.
Sound
How is the tone?
I love the sound that comes out of it. I use it mainly on vocals, and there is definitely coloration to the voice. I like to use it on female vocals to give them a little "darker" edge, and it does this quite nicely. If you don't like coloration from your pre, I would stay away from this and look at something more like the ISA One.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
Haven't had an issue with it ever....so it's held up pretty well.
Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
This is probably the best pre at this price point. This pre holds up very well with others that are in the $600 - $1,000 price range. So it is definitely a bargain. I wanted to choose between this and the more expensive ISA One. After I tested both out, I ran after the Golden Age. It has a sound that is absolutely gorgeous and blew away the ISA One for what I was looking to do. As I said before though there is quite a bit of coloration with this pre. So if you want clean unaltered sound, this is not the pre for you. I think the coloration does add the warmth though that is missing from many other modern units these days.

Amazing sounding preamp for the home studio

The build is solid. The knobs feel sturdy. It seems as though you could drop it from a few feet and it would still function perfectly. However, I'm not taking any chances.

I love the multi-input gain stage! And the limiting is great if you don't have an external compressor to run the signal into before tracking in your DAW. The only thing I wish this guy had is two channels.

Powering up is easy. As far as the gain stages, if you're not familiar with this style of preamp it may take some getting use to. But after you toy with it for a few takes, you'll find it puts out a great sound.
Sound
How is the tone?
The tone is colored. But if that's what you're looking for, then this is for you. It terms of the coloring... it's deep, fat and helps you cut through a busy mix with any instrument/microphone. It adds a very vintage feel to your tracks. The sound is miles ahead of any preamp in it's price range and maybe even beyond.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
Everything works perfectly. Golden Age has really taken the time to design a solid preamp that will last decades.
Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
Overall, this is a great preamp for anyone who is looking to travel beyond the ART or TubePre sound. It's cleaner sounding, has more features and really isn't much more expensive.
