Took awhile, but I love it!
General
Your general opinion of this product.
I was looking for a guitar that had a feel of an electric and the sound of an acoustic. Found this one with the Koa top used in a local shop. Tried it in the store. So-so sound, but action and neck felt great. I left it there and thought about it overnight. Went back, tried it again, still felt terrific, but sound was fair. Came home without it and did some research online. Went back again and bought it on a 'trial' basis. Plugged it into my gear, tweaked it out and it is in one word 'phenomenal'! I love it. Does exactly what I wanted it to.
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
It is an exceptional instrument. I looked it over from top to bottom, inside out, and TRIED to find a defect so that I would have a reason NOT to buy it. Binding, wood, neck, electrons, all top notch. Made in Canada and USA, and every bit as quality as those other USA guitar makers. Solid, well made and well thought out. Finish was perfect.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
It has the neck feel of an SG, the body feel of a Telecaster and the tone of anything you can think of. Stereo outputs to split the piezo and the hum bucker, dual controls, perfect balance, not too heavy, neck and frets impeccable.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Took a little trial and error and about 2 hours of fooling around with it, but I can get everything I need out of it. A nice acoustic guitar sound from the UST and a nice Les Paul sound from the hum bucker. Blending the two can make any sound in between, and even a tele sound with some adjustments. The hum bucker is much hotter than the piezo, but with just a touch of hum bucker blended with the piezo, makes a SWEET acoustic sound.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
I bought it used, but there is no way to adjust the bridge, it is fixed ala acoustic bridge. The action was perfect though, and is a joy to play.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Flawless. Like a mirror. I would have preferred a high gloss finish on the back of then neck, but that is just my preference. The rest of the guitar is super high gloss and not a flaw anywhere. Binding and all fittings really well done.
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
Too new for me to tell, but it seems solid and worthy of a professional who uses it for a living. I am disappointed at the quality coming from another well known guitar maker whose name begins with Gib... so I decided to try something completely different than I ever had before, and this Godin made me a believer in guitars other than the 'big three'. Well done, Godin!
