Hughes and Kettner Red Box Classic Passive Direct Box

The Hughes and Kettner Red Box Classic is a world-famous guitar direct box - you'll never have to mic a guitar speaker again!
The Red Box converts your amp's Line Out or Speaker Out(!!) signal into a balanced, frequency-compensated signal that you can feed direcrly into a mixer. The Red Box Classic features two voicing options, a 4x12-inch cabinet and a 2x12-inch combo.

The Red Box Classic may be powered by Phantom Power, or a standard power adaptor like the Boss PSA120, a 9 volt battery, or anything from 9-15V AC or 9-24V DC.

Hugnes and Kettner Red Box Benefits

  • No mic required
  • No sound deviations due to different mics/mic positions
  • Authentic speaker sound even at low levels
  • No feedback
  • No undesirable spillage from other signal sources
  • No phase cancellations caused by neighboring mics

Subject:different
Quality: a very solid piece. i have seen older ones that have been toured with quite extensivly and have held up over the years.
Sound: the 4x12 setting is by far superior to the combo setting, but can be a little thin and a bit too bright if its your only guitar source. Add a 57 or a 906(preferably) and the guitar comes alive.
Reliability: no problems here
Overall: over all this is not a bad product if used properly.
Playability and Feel: its a DI not an instrument
Tone: a little bright, cut a small amout of 3.15k and high shelf at 6.3k, and it will tame the highs. add a mic and boost 2-3.15k and you should have a good starting point.
Finish: like the name states its a red box. whats nice is that the setup instructions are clearly painted on the box.
Action: easy to setup

Subject:You Can't Beat This thing With a Stick!!!
Quality: This is a rugged little box that runs off of phantom power (so you can output through a tube preamp), a 9V battery or a standard Dunlop ECB-003 adaptor, and it really does give you great recording tone.
Reliability: This thing works each and every time I run it through my amp's line out.
Overall: Like the title says, you can't beat it with a stick. I've been using my original Red Box classic for over a decade and it's one of the few things I really can't be without when doing demo/recording work.
Playability and Feel: There is one switch to select cabinet mode, and the rest of the time you leave this connected in your signal path and it does all the work for you.
Tone: The 4 x 12" setting is rich, full and expansive; the 2 x 12" combo setting is darker and not quite as up-front, but it really helps when switching between different output guitars.
Finish: The paint job features instructions on how to use it; it looks smart overall.
Action: It was ready to go as soon as I got it home.
