Ibanez MSC550 Montage Acoustic Electric Guitar

The Ibanez MSC550 Montage acoustic electric guitar is one of the most beautiful sounding and artistically crafted guitars we've seen!
Built to provide a range of sparkling acoustic tones all the way to electric sounds from clean and punchy to snarling and brash. Not to mention the built-in effects and tuner. That’s right, all in one guitar. In 2008, Ibanez proudly presents the revolutionary Montage, offering 5 different sound options from full acoustic to straight electric and everything in between. Onboard gain, reverb, chorus, tuner and more—the Montage is both gorgeous and one of the most versatile and useful Ibanez guitars ever.

Loaded to the max with groundbreaking, innovative electronics which includes 2 acoustic sounds and 2 electric sounds with mix option. No kidding! Onboard reverb, chorus, distortion, phase reversal as well as a dual notch filter and tuner. The Montage uses the B-Band UST pickup for the acoustic tones and an AP-9 magnetic pickup for the electric sound. Simple neck tilt mechanism for no-hassle action adjustment which uses an Ibanez proprietary detachable neck with comfortable grip and shape. No other acoustic electric guitar comes close to competing with what this piece has to offer.

Ibanez Guitars - A Short History Of A Company With A Long History
If you wanted a total history of Ibanez you'd have go back to 1908 when a company named Hoshino began as a sheet music store and later music products distributor in Nagoya Japan.

If you wanted a little less completeness than that you'd go back about forty-five when Hoshino began distributing a Spanish guitar named Ibanez. Or perhaps you'd simply go to the Mid 60's when Hoshino, who by that time had purchased the rights to the Ibanez name, began shipping incredibly funky looking guitars to the United States, many of which were actually sold in department stores.

But for most of us, Ibanez pretty much begins almost 30 years ago, when Hoshino opened an office near Philadelphia, PA for more efficiently distributing Ibanez guitars to the United States. Most of those guitars were Ibanez' famous high quality (but very inexpensive) copies of just about everything–you name it, we probably made a version of it. At that time many American instruments were going through an unfortunate period of increasing prices with decreasing quality, and these copies hit a ready market.

But the people with Ibanez weren't content with just copying and Ibanez began making their own designs: the solid body Artists (played by Bob Weir of the Dead) the Iceman (first made famous by Paul Stanley of KISS) and the George Benson guitars, the first jazz boxes designed for higher volume stage playing. Many of these first Ibanez guitars continue to increase in value and a good number are now highly prized collector's items.

By 1976, the Ibanez copy era officially came to an end when one of the major American guitar manufacturers--no longer amused by the copiers–successfully sued the highest profile copier, Ibanez. But by that time it didn't matter–Ibanez had already left the copies behind and was fast becoming an innovative guitar company in its own right.

By the mid-80's with the interest in instrumental rock guitar on the rise, Ibanez collaborated with players such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Paul Gilbert and brought out the JEM, JS, RG and S models. Today, present day versions such as these models still considered the standard in hard rock and instrumental rock guitars.

As well known for its jazz guitars as it is for rock, Ibanez has an impressive line of jazz boxes including the aforementioned George Benson models, two Pat Metheny models, and most recently, the new John Scofield signature semi-acoustic.

One final note...Ibanez is also one of the top selling bass companies in the world (in many places the top selling bass). Ibanez first drew attention in the 70's and 80's with its neck-thru Musician basses with active electronics. Today, Ibanez offers the huge number of 4, 5, and 6 basses in the Soundgear line, as well as the Ergodyne models, the basses of the future.

Subject:Very Cool and Revolutionary Guitar
Quality: From my inspection this guitar is very well made.
Reliability: I've only owned it for a short time now and so far so good. My only concern is the new unique neck adjustments (F.A.S.T.) There are 4 independent adjustments that can be made to the neck, which includes the trussrod. This is very cool and could be revolutionary to the industry, and was easy to make the adjustments.
Overall: I own several guitars and the Ibanez MSC550TRD is the most unique. From its sound to its design this guitar is so cool. It sounds awesome in either acoustic or electric mode.
Playability and Feel: The feel is good. The body felt right either on the leg or strapped. Was not chunky or heavy.
Tone: This guitar can hit any tone you're going for and sounds great in either bright/snappy/dark or smooth. With it's on-board electronics this guitar can make it. The chorus and reverb is really great no, and the overdrive is super too. No peddles to buy. Great for live performance.
Finish: I do think that Ibanez could have done a better job on the finish. This is my only complaint about the guitar. They just missed on the one I have. At the same time I'm not sending it back either. The tone and other uniqueness's makes it a keeper.
Action: Action out of the box was not bad but I prefer and a lower action and after a few adjustments it was fine. Didn't have to touch the trussrod or saddle. All adjustments I made was using the Ibanez Fast Action Set-Up Technology (F.A.S.T) Really cool.

Overall: ibanez did their homework on this bad boy.
Playability and Feel: the neck is slim like an electric is. easy to access controls
Tone: bright and snappy
Finish: the finish on it is fantastic! you definitely get what you pay for
Action: the action is a little high out of the box. atleast mine was. but with the F.A.S.T. it's fairly easy to fix. just loosen strings and the two neck bolts and turn the truss rod till you need to.

Subject:Great all around guitar
Quality: Not quite perfect but exceeds my expectations for this price range its not a Gibson, but for Ibanez it is nice
Reliability: Unknown at this time
Overall: This is a fantastic "Swiss Army Knife" of guitars, it really does it all. It is great for gigging or for worship leading every control is at your finger tips and has great tone no matter what I play through, with a little on board EQ it is easy to dial in. I'm shocked I haven't heard more about this instrument it really is an excellent buy, especially if you don't like hauling multiple guitars, pedals, power supplies and cables.
Playability and Feel: It has a thin neck that is easy to play and adjust to your specifications thanks to the F.A.S.T. neck design
Tone: It has great tone and suprizing low end, I expected it to be tinny but it has more low end than you would think and the variation of tones is almost limitless. The electric pickup has no hum, virtually silent. Great all around instrument
Finish: The finish is beautiful and the perfect color of Red. Everyone comments on how nice it looks and I bought a scratch and dent, though I could find nothing other than a few pick marks, which happen anyway.
Action: The action was not good out of the box and I had to adjust the F.A.S.T. neck, It didn't come with instructions on how to adjust it, but I found some on a discussion board, loosen the two big bolts and tighten the little one then retighten the big bolts, it takes about 3-5 times to get it just right and was fast and easy to do.

Subject:Fluke? The guitar is very good. The finish is very bad.
Quality: This guitar is well made, with the exception of the finish on the guitar that I received. I would think quality control would have pulled this one out of the line and called it a b-stock/blemish.
Reliability: Just received the guitar. I don't forsee any problems with reliability as it is a well built guitar.
Overall: This guitar would be awesome if it had no blemishes. It would be awesome if the flame top wasn't made from three pieces that don't even come close to matching up.
Playability and Feel: The guitar plays very well. It feels like an acoustic with great action.
Tone: The tone is surprisingly good unplugged. It doesn't sound thin at all as I thought with might. While unplugged it is adequately loud to sing / song write with. When plugged in the guitar sounds great.
Finish: My guitar must be a fluke. No other reviews that I saw complained about the finish. The finish on mine is extremely disappointing. It has rolls and dimples in the finish, and the flamed maple doesn't match up. It looks very bad. I'm blown away that it got passed Ibanez quality control and AMS inspections. I'm surprised AMS shipped this ugly mug out to me. It is being returned for this reason. I hope this is a fluke, because I don't want to have to return the replacement.
Action: The action was quite good out of the box.
