Ibanez MSC650VV Montage Acoustic Electric Guitar

The Ibanez MSC650 Montage acoustic electric guitar is one of the most beautiful sounding and artistically crafted guitars we've seen!
Built to provide a range of sparkling acoustic tones all the way to electric sounds from clean and punchy to snarling and brash. Not to mention the built-in effects and tuner. That’s right, all in one guitar. In 2008, Ibanez proudly presents the revolutionary Montage, offering 5 different sound options from full acoustic to straight electric and everything in between. Onboard gain, reverb, chorus, tuner and more—the Montage is both gorgeous and one of the most versatile and useful Ibanez guitars ever.

Loaded to the max with groundbreaking, innovative electronics which includes 2 acoustic sounds and 2 electric sounds with mix option. No kidding! Onboard reverb, chorus, distortion, phase reversal as well as a dual notch filter and tuner. The Montage uses the B-Band UST pickup for the acoustic tones and an AP-9 magnetic pickup for the electric sound. Simple neck tilt mechanism for no-hassle action adjustment which uses an Ibanez proprietary detachable neck with comfortable grip and shape. No other acoustic electric guitar comes close to competing with what this piece has to offer.

Ibanez Guitars - A Short History Of A Company With A Long History
If you wanted a total history of Ibanez you'd have go back to 1908 when a company named Hoshino began as a sheet music store and later music products distributor in Nagoya Japan.

If you wanted a little less completeness than that you'd go back about forty-five when Hoshino began distributing a Spanish guitar named Ibanez. Or perhaps you'd simply go to the Mid 60's when Hoshino, who by that time had purchased the rights to the Ibanez name, began shipping incredibly funky looking guitars to the United States, many of which were actually sold in department stores.

But for most of us, Ibanez pretty much begins almost 30 years ago, when Hoshino opened an office near Philadelphia, PA for more efficiently distributing Ibanez guitars to the United States. Most of those guitars were Ibanez' famous high quality (but very inexpensive) copies of just about everything–you name it, we probably made a version of it. At that time many American instruments were going through an unfortunate period of increasing prices with decreasing quality, and these copies hit a ready market.

But the people with Ibanez weren't content with just copying and Ibanez began making their own designs: the solid body Artists (played by Bob Weir of the Dead) the Iceman (first made famous by Paul Stanley of KISS) and the George Benson guitars, the first jazz boxes designed for higher volume stage playing. Many of these first Ibanez guitars continue to increase in value and a good number are now highly prized collector's items.

By 1976, the Ibanez copy era officially came to an end when one of the major American guitar manufacturers--no longer amused by the copiers–successfully sued the highest profile copier, Ibanez. But by that time it didn't matter–Ibanez had already left the copies behind and was fast becoming an innovative guitar company in its own right.

By the mid-80's with the interest in instrumental rock guitar on the rise, Ibanez collaborated with players such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Paul Gilbert and brought out the JEM, JS, RG and S models. Today, present day versions such as these models still considered the standard in hard rock and instrumental rock guitars.

As well known for its jazz guitars as it is for rock, Ibanez has an impressive line of jazz boxes including the aforementioned George Benson models, two Pat Metheny models, and most recently, the new John Scofield signature semi-acoustic.

One final note...Ibanez is also one of the top selling bass companies in the world (in many places the top selling bass). Ibanez first drew attention in the 70's and 80's with its neck-thru Musician basses with active electronics. Today, Ibanez offers the huge number of 4, 5, and 6 basses in the Soundgear line, as well as the Ergodyne models, the basses of the future.

Subject:Nice Hybrid For the Price
Quality: Out of the box, the guitar looks great and the action was very good.
Reliability: I've had the guitar for a couple of months and have had no issues.
Overall: I play a T5 for most of my gigs, so I was looking for something similar to have as a backup. This guitar fits the bill nicely. It's not a T5, but at a third of the price, I wasn't expecting it to be.
Playability and Feel: I replaced the stock strings with Elixer Electric 11's and adjusted the neck slightly to get a bit better action. I really love the feel of the guitar. Most people would probably not need to do this, but I wanted it to feel as close to my T5 as I could get it.
Tone: What's nice is the 5 way toggle on the front of the guitar which allows you to change the tone and pickups on the fly. Nice for when you want to drive a song a bit harder with a little distortion.
Finish: Nice look on the body. The neck looks a bit cheap to me.
Action: Good

Subject:Out of the box WOW !
Quality: This guitar is pretty decent quality for the price range. One of the cool things about this instrument is that the offset sound hole actually seems to improve two things that I normally have trouble with on an acoustic/electric. The first is how the guitar would seem to get muddy the harder it was strummed. The second is that I would have to compete with the lodness of the acoustic to sing while it was unplugged. This guitar seems to be well balanced volume wise compared to an average human voice and the tonal clarity is great even at full power strumming.
Reliability: I just bought mine ... but if it holds up like my other Ibanez has over the years I am sure it will be fine.
Overall: I purchased this instrument with the simple expectation of getting a mid level acoustic electric. I was completely suprised at how decent the guitar actually is. After having it for about 20 minutes I already felt like I had owned it most of my life. This instrument definately fit my style of playing and my taste and I was extremely pleased.
Playability and Feel: The feel and playability of this instrument was well above my expectations. For those of you reading this ... I also own a Paul Reed Smith, and a Brian Moore iGuitar ... I have been playing and recording for about 25 years and have played a myriad of guitars. I mention this to let you know that my personal opinion about this guitar is not based on a shallow pool of experience. If you are on the fence about buying one of these, look at some of the videos on youtube and see all of the tonal possibilities you get from this.
Tone: The tone is very good ... with on-board chorus, reverb, distortion and eq and the 5 position switch you can get almost any tone you would need without relying on additional effects units. Again for the reader ... I also have a Roland VG-88 and a Line6 Pod XT Live. In my software studio I also have Amplitube and the Line6 Gearbox plugin. With this guitar I have not needed to use the external effects to get a lush sounding acoustic. My old rig required a very painstaking mic process and then I had to use an expander to kill the ambient floor. With this setup I can just plug it in and record ... this keeps the creative juices flowing as I am not pausing my mind to hook up gear so I can catch the moment.
Finish: I was very happy with the finish ... it has a warm antique look to it which I find very inspirational. I did have a couple of minor blemishes on mine ... but I will be playing it quite a bit and I know from experience that I will inevitably ding it myself ....
Action: The action was is good for a factory setup and I do not imagine I will have to adjust anything.
