Amazing Guitar!
What is your overall opinion of this product?
The "Iron Label" series is definitely a well put together guitar line. The sound, the playability, the appearance are all fantastic. This 8-string is beyond amazing.
What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music?
The quality is up there, and especially with the price tag, it shows. It's a very solidly built instrument, and it's perfectly honed for handling the low tunings. These guitars are geared for metal, and they definitely excel there, but the tones you can get from this guitar make it useful for all styles of music.
Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
The neck on this guitar is a thing of beauty. The notes are very clear and defined. It's a very fast neck, and really comfortable, as are the Wizard necks. The binding around the fretboard is a nice touch, and it keeps the fret ends from being sharp. The sides of the fretboard are so smooth, it's so easy to play on. It's a very thin but sturdy neck, easily one of the best Ibanez sells on their guitars.
How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin?
The tone of this guitar is bright enough to handle the low notes with ease, but also has some warmth to it to balance out the high notes. With the EMG 808's in this, the tone really shines through. I've read a lot of reviews on 808's saying that they're muddy, and that is absolutely not the case with my experience. I'm sure the guitar quality plays into it a bit, but even tuning as low as E on the lowest string, it's articulate and precise all the way up the fretboard. I can't say enough about how great of a tone you can get out this guitar. Even playing clean, the tone is nice and full. There's no harshness to any of it. The sustain is brilliant.
How did the stain or paint job look?
The pictures do not do the finish justice. In person, the quilted maple with the Abalone binding and gold hardware really make this guitar look elegant. It may come off as "gaudy" in pictures to some people, but all of these things really work and compliment each other. It's something to show off. It's just gorgeous. The red, or Burgundy-Wine to be exact, is a great shade. Some pictures make it look bright red. It's a darker, smoother red, and very nice to look at. I'm a huge fan of quilted maple, and under the light, this finish dances and shines. Sometimes on production guitars the polyurethane can be tricky around the pickups, with it not quite covering all the wood and while there's a small spot at the neck pickup route where this is the case, but it's very minimalistic as well as nitpicky of me. The overall look is fantastic.
Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range?
The value of this guitar is great. It's easily worth a bit more. The Gibraltar bridge is a thing of genius. It's got a radius at the top that's the same as the neck, so it's easy to match with the fretboard. The saddles and overall build of the bridge is very solid, and really helps with the overall tone and sustain. It really should be on every fixed-bridge guitar. When given the chance, really look at one of these bridges to see all of the subtle improvements it has on a normal bridge. With the fantastic looks and great playability as well as tone, this guitar is definitely worth it.
How was the action out of the box?
The setup on this guitar was perfect. Perfectly to factory spec, and I haven't even changed the stock strings yet, because that's how playable this guitar is right away. It's phenomenal. This guitar really got a thorough setup process, adding to the value of it overall. The low strings are a bit light, but they're doing just fine. That speaks volumes of the build of this instrument. It holds tuning while playing, just as well as a double-locking guitar or locking tuners. The notes really ring from this guitar, and even power chords on the lowest strings resonate clearly. The playability is great.
