Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
The components and wood are excellent. The electronics and pickups are outstanding. The knobs on the controls function fine but look cheap. The Leather strap that is included is very nice. The included case is OK but the handle is loose and flimsy.
Features
What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could?
The parametric mid-range and the cut and boost EQ works awesome. The Drop D bridge works well but is something that could wear out with heavy use. The battery box for the EQ is the nicest one I've seen, works really good. The strap buttons are high quality. AMS shipped it to me in 2 days and at this price even with the flaws you can't go wrong.
Sound
How is its Tone?
The unplugged tone very resonant, a little dark. For a bolt on neck and non-string-thru body it has plenty of sustain. Fret clank from the strings is minimal. No buzzes whatsoever.
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
The thin neck and body are very comfortable. My American Jazz Bass has the nicest finished and most playable neck I've played. This one will need a little work. Overall this Soundgear has a great feel. The controls are easy and accessible. The high frets can be reached easily. With the strap on it balances perfect.
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
The Bartolini pups and the active EQ make this a very hiss free and versatile Bass. It can be adjusted to snarl or be mellow and anywhere in between. This SR could be used for any style of music. Live or Studio work this thing can do it all as far as tone and sound.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
The Body and neck finish are very nice. The gold plating is top notch. The reason for the 3 and that's generous is the fret ends are not finished properly. I got a metal sliver when i was playing it. Some are very sharp. My Squier Jazz Bass has better finished fret ends. As far as being level and buzz free they are perfect. For all the hype I've read about The Prestige made in Japan craftsmanship this Bass didn't live up to it.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
The action at the 12th fret was perfect. The nut height on the D and G strings is too high. Higher than the E and A. The D-Tuner at bridge needed to be setup. The Peg tuners and bridge feel solid and of high quality. The intonation was set perfect. Overall decent not outstanding.
