Overall Rating
Jackson is in my blood!
What is your overall opinion of this product?
Lean and mean, down and dirty. A 7 string meant for mayhem, very much a go-to type guitar, has a workhorse feel to it. Well balanced weight-wise, neither heavy nor too light. Looks, sounds, smells and taste like a Jackson.
What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music?
The materials used are what one would expect from Jackson. Easily an axe you could tour with and be proud to be seen playing. Came with string lock nut not attached but it was in the foam wrap and the guitar needed to be adjusted anyways due to the deep drop in temp during shipping, this is no fault of AMS or Jackson, just old man winter. Owners manual as very very helpful with set-up specs.
Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Feels like driving a new car that has a powerful engine, and great stopping power. Tight, smooth and balanced. I rated feel and playability a 4 due to the placement of the pickup selector, if you do fast changes, it will take some getting used to, especially if coming from a Stratocaster as I am. Neck has a nice compound radius and even with small hands feels very accessible in any position.
How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin?
The tone is EMG+Mahogany which equals out to a buzzsaw in a great way, surprisingly good dynamics for active pickups, very punchy and loud, you won't get a strat tone with this configuration but thats not why you bought this guitar and if you did that's bad research on your part. Expect Metallica, Tritium type sound, does swept arpeggios quite nicely. Shred with confidence.
How did the stain or paint job look?
The matte black is smooth and hides sweat blood and tears. Stage lights give it a nice glow. Zero complaints on the finish, looks and feels like a quality finish.
Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range?
Feels as good or better than some guitars in its price range and better than some twice its price. Feels just as good as some signature models out there.
How was the action out of the box?
It was off in string height but not by much and a quick adjustment has it perfect. The tune was way off but mostly due to temp, again that is just winter and it is no different then when you change strings and readjust. I have small hands and this 7 string is very easy to play, don't let your eyes fool your hands, just use your muscle memory and play. The neck begs to be explored so do it and enjoy the ride!
