Vocals
TonePort hardware features studio-grade microphone preamps that make getting a truly professional-grade vocal tone easy. The exclusive GearBox tone software gives you models of the most sought after preamps in the recording world. GearBox even lets you run a completely different signal path for your microphone input with models of vintage preamps, compressors, and reverbs while still giving you the ultimate direct recording sound for your guitar or bass. In minutes, you’ll be creating sounds that typically take an entire studio, an expert engineer, and a huge hourly rate to pull off!
GearBox Exclusive Preamp Models:
American Classic
Inspired by* an API lunch box preamp in a classic studio setup: - API - 512c Mic Pre
- API - 550b EQ
- Studer - 2-inch tape (Including Emphasis/De-emphasis & tape Soft Clip)
This model gives you classic rock tone that’s focused and a bit compressed through soft distortion. It even includes the treasured tonality and saturation you'd get when recording to classic 24-track analog tape! Good for transients and maintaining a leveled vocal.
Vintage UK
Inspired by* a Neve 1073
Warm with mild distortion when pushed. Vintage UK handles transients very well and is great for vocal tracking. Extended bass range also makes it great for direct bass and drum work.
Console
Solid State Console Mic Pre Design
Has a flat frequency response that’s clean with no artifacts or colorization. A great choice for tracking line level instruments like a keyboard.
Vintage
Inspired by* a Classic Vintage Tube Preamp setup consisting of:
- Requisite Y7 Mic Pre
- API - 550b EQ
- Studer - 2-inch tape (Including Emphasis/De-emphasis & tape Soft Clip)
This model yields vintage Motown, Memphis, Nashville, and early rock sounds.
Lo-Fi
Has a small speaker sound that’s slightly distorted. Great for adding an overdriven vocal to a track.

QUALITY: For $199, this thing couldn't be TOO sturdy, and it is light and minimal. It will not sustain lots of abuse, and it won't survive spilled beer or soda. It is nice looking, though, and thoughtfully designed.
FEATURES: To have guitar, mic and bass preamp and amp models at your fingertips is just amazing.
Balances mic inputs, both of which can be used simultaneously ... what more could a desktop songmaker want? I always thought that the Pod concept did not have to be just guitar, and now they've done it. What I just wonder is how much is done in the case and how much is done in your computer. Is this really just a nice connecting-port for inputs to soft-synths (modeled amps, in this case), or is the processing done IN the TonePort?
At $200, I suspect there is minimal circuitry in the TonePort itself, and most of the work is done in your PC.
EASE OF USE: Crazy, crazy easy to use. Period.
VALUE: $200? |
