The Marshall Plexi 1987XL shares the same front and rear panel features as its 100-Watt big brother, the 1959 SLP, yet retains its own distinct personality.
Sweet warm singing EL34 sounds are packed into every nook and cranny of this great tone machine. As is the case with the 1959SLP, the 1987X has fittings and hardware as true to the originals as humanly possible, thus ensuring that authentic Marshall Vintage look. The Marshall re-issue models all are faithful reproductions of the originals, which shaped the sound of the electric guitar as we know it. The main characteristic that these amps share is their simplicity of operation and superb natural valve tone. Achieving the beautifully organic and vibrant overdrive which is their trademark, can only be done in one way - crank 'em up! The result is pure, majestic tone uncluttered by unnecessary circuitry. With solos this produces a big, round, warm, sustain, full of classic character. With chord work you get a bark and percussive attack with a natural sounding break up, which allows each note to ring out in a glorious musical crunch.
FX Loop
Due to high demand, a sonically transparent effects loop has been added to the 1987X model. This circuitry has been designed to not color the guitar sound, so that your tone remains pure. The bypass switch gives you the option of completely removing this circuitry if desired. The effects loop level selector ensures compatibility with rack processors or floor pedals (stomp boxes).

Give This Amp Serious Consideration
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
Form, fit and finish is excellent--I have never had problems with Marshalls. Dependable? I expect it to last for decades as the vintage ones have.
|
Reliability
How has it stood up over time?
I just got it--but as above, I believe it will stand up over time. Like most quality amps--these sound better as they age,
|
Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
More than saying, "It's a Marshall", the product is high quality, can be used just about anywhere to project its marvelous tone.
|
Playability and Feel
How does it feel, Heavy, Fast, Chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
All of the above--the control panel is vintage Marshall and simple to use. This is what I like about these amps--simple controls: plug in and go.
|
Tone
Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick, thin?
Again a guitar question--I describe the sound as dark and smooth. I highly recommend this amp (and speakers)if one knows how to play well.
|
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
Nicely done. The tolex and beading is installed properly, no dings or tears--the logo was on straight--yes very quality built.
|
Action
How was the action out of the box?
More of a guitar question--but the knobs turn smoothly; everything connects properly and functions when I turn on the output circuit!

Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
Excellent Made in UK quality. In the last 2 years ive seen one of these things (still) being used on stage by everyone from BB King to Jeff Beck to neil young to power pop bands.they were the standard 35 years ago and they are still the standard today. just try to deny it.

Overall
Your general opinion of this product.
Some complain that Marshalls are old fashioned and out of style. To that i would say, good enduring music is art, and guitar playing is a craft. An artist or a craftsman dosent need stylish clay or canvas, you just need good clay or canvas. This amp is the good clay to create some new art, or work within a strict traditional style. I would take one of these, and all the music that has been recorded and performed on them since 1969 over a "modern" amp packed with goofy features i dont need, or if i do, i will invest in high quality studio editions.

slightly dark in a warm, grainy way at low volume/gain setting, and develops midrange bite, note definition and the highs and lows become more distinct and separated until full volume. At full volume you get the mid heavy Marhsall roar that defined the sound of heavy rock electric guitar
