Product Description

Martin 00017SM Mahogany Body Sitka Spruce Top Acoustic Guitars have the body of a Style 17 guitar, known for the blues, especially during the early 1900s. The dry, crisp tone attracted many blues players. As early as the mid 1800s Martin built Spruce top acoustic guitars. These 12-fret Style 17 guitars are making a come back courtesy of Martin. This new 000-17SM acoustic guitar has a Sitka spruce top with a simple Style 17 single rosette and modern A-frame bracing, giving this guitar the best of both tonalities. This guitar has a balanced, woody sound of a 000 Mahogany body combined with the clear articulation of a spruce top. The 000-17SM features a slotted 12-fret Mahogany neck that tapers from 2.25 inches at the saddle to 1.75 inches at the nut. Unique looks and features to the 00017SM are the brown tortoise top bindings, a special dark shaded high gloss top, and Waverly Golden Age tuners with ivoroid buttons.

General
What is your overall opinion of this product?
A real nice acoustic, though a bit pricey! Probably would have been more realistic around the $1200.00 range. But overall - I give it a 5 star rating.
Quality
What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music?
I was really surprised at the volume this puts out for their "modern A frame bracing." It can play sweet and soft or you can really dig in and make some noise! It's got great playability feeling for the hands and fits snugly against the body when sitting. It's comfortable. It has a good feeling overall. Light and maneuverable.
Feel
Was it easy to reach the strings? How comfortable was the playing position?
I love it for a 12 fret. I was worried that it may have too much distance between the frets for the hands, but I was wrong. It was smooth and easy to the touch. Surprisingly, very playable for a 12 fret acoustic. You kind of get that vintage vibe feel from it. The neck being quite manageable - slender and smooth to the hands, not fat or chunky like I thought it would be. A pleasant surprise to be sure! Even though they have a quality set of Martin strings on; they feel like piano wires so I'll have to change that aspect. I know, it's all personal preference - I'll give them this (the strings); they do sound nice.
Tone
Is the tone well balanced? How does it project?
It's definitely well balanced, all the way around. You have plenty of bass, midrange and a nice subtle high end. The string tension is tight due to the Martin strings that I mentioned, but nothing that your choice of strings wouldn't change. It projects really well - it has excellent volume (really). I'm not at all worried about amp'n it. If I do, I'll probably just go with a decent sound hole pickup, like Fishman or something to keep that old looking vibe going...though I would consider an under the saddle pickup if I was wanting to look a little more polished, so long as it keeps close to it original sound. Because the guitar itself, really does have a great tone!
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
The Finish is flawless! Super gloss top only. But keep in mind that no one really sees the back and sides anyway. And if they do, they look pretty awesome too. Now for the color. Well, let just say, it's a simple barn brown. The shading does help, but don't expect 21st century techicolor. Ya' have to just keep in mind that this guitar harkens back to the early 20th century, or at least it's suppose to (and they came pretty close).
Value
Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range?
A bit pricey, but it's a Martin and they do have quality. You can see the impeccable craftsmanship and the playability matched with the sound - it's darn GOOD! But, all said, yeah it's a bit pricey. I'd recommend it though!
Playability
How was the action out of the box?
Straight out of the box, you'd swear it was set up by a tech. Not too high and not too close. No buzz or dead spots. Feels right on the hands and fingers and plays smoothly - pick or fingerstyle (seriously). Nice comfy nut spacing, at least for my big fingers. You can pretty much play it all on this one. From blues to rock and even a bit of country. Though probably best for blues to simple acoustic rock. The sound's there. The playability is there and of course, the quality of its sound and craftsmanship. Yeah, it's a Martin through and through. Good job guys! it makes the cut!
