M Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Audio Interface

The M Audio Audiophile 2496 24-bit/96kHz, 4-in/-4 Out PCI Digital Recording Interface with MIDI is an all-in-one high fidelity soundcard solution for a wide variety of applications, ranging from multitrack recording to computer-based home theatre.

Analog I/O is available on RCA jacks, utilizing the same professional 24-bit 96kHz conversion as the M Audio's popular Delta 44 and Delta 66 cards. S/PDIF I/O and MIDI I/O provide connectivity to both digital devices and the world of MIDI.

ProTools Compatible

The Audiophile 2496 includes a powerful digital mixer/router, and control over SCMS (Serial Copy Management System). Delta cards support all computer platforms and major software programs.

With software support, the Audiophile 2496 becomes the highest fidelity home theatre soundcard available today.

In the Box

  • Instruction manual
  • One Audiophile 2496 PCI adapter card
  • One Audiophile 2496 break-out cable for S/PDIF and MIDI connections
  • CD or diskette containing software drivers and Delta Control Panel software for Windows 98/95/NT and Macintosh OS 8.5.1 or higher

Ableton Live Lite 5
Ableton Live Lite 5 delivers much of the functionality of Ableton Live 5—the revolutionary, multi-award winning music production solution that allows you to spontaneously compose, record, remix, improvise and edit your musical ideas in a seamless audio/MIDI environment. Live brings your acoustic, electronic and virtual instruments—as well as your digital audio recordings and MIDI sequences—together in a single interface with unparalleled ease of use.

36-bit Embedded DSP
All Delta cards contain a 36-bit embedded DSP enabling a software-driven patchbay/router for all analog and digital I/O—all with extremely fast throughput for low-latency software monitoring. A single unified control panel provides settings for clock and sample rates, buffer sizes, individual signal levels for every input and output, adjustable +4dBu/-10dBV pad conrols and digital I/O control on up to four installed Delta cards. All controls are also easily accessible through most professional audio software applications for seamless integration and operation.

"The biggest eyebrow-raiser for us in this year's awards is the relegation of the Sound Blaster Live! to second place in the soundcard category. What might at first glance seem like a fairly trivial movement is, I would suggest, actually indicative of an overall shift in the home computer music market away from all-in-one, originally games-orientated soundcards to single-purpose high quality audio systems such as this year's winner, the M-Audio Audiophile. Think back to only a couple of years ago and the number of affordable audio cards available to the potential buyer could have been counted on one hand; nowadays we see at least one new (and invariably excellent) model a month, and it's a trend that's clearly set to continue. Good news for everyone, then."

Overall: In my simple home studio set up this is the best piece of gear I have. I made a demo at 24/96 and the difference is noticeable. I've had it for two years almost and I have no complaints. I recommend it.

Overall: Quality for the low price. Only complaint is the MAudio mixer software (which is the same for the more expensive models)is querky and keeps muting channels. Other than that, sounds much better than sound blasters and such in same price range.

QUALITY:
Great. It also depends on wha kind of speakers you have.

FEATURES:
Could be that it can do digital I/O. You can try and mix your stuff. Lack 1/8"- you need a 1/8" audio cable with RCA converter you are connecting to your computer speakers.

EASE OF USE:
Excellent. You will have to change occassionally settings in "Sounds" on your Windows "Control Panel" to get the output (sound)- depends on whether you are switching from S/PDIF, analog or from your onboard (built-in) sound card if your mainboard comes with it.

VALUE:
Good, don't buy it

Great
