"The biggest eyebrow-raiser for us in this year's awards is the relegation of the Sound Blaster Live! to second place in the soundcard category. What might at first glance seem like a fairly trivial movement is, I would suggest, actually indicative of an overall shift in the home computer music market away from all-in-one, originally games-orientated soundcards to single-purpose high quality audio systems such as this year's winner, the M-Audio Audiophile. Think back to only a couple of years ago and the number of affordable audio cards available to the potential buyer could have been counted on one hand; nowadays we see at least one new (and invariably excellent) model a month, and it's a trend that's clearly set to continue.
