M Audio Octane 8 Channel Digital Preamp

The M Audio Octane 8 Channel Digital Preamp is an 8-channel Preamp and A/D Converter with ADAT Lightpipe.
The M Audio Octane is the perfect match for the FireWire 18/14. At this aggressive price, Octane is perfect for enhancing the front end of any multitrack digital recording system. Its award-winning M-Audio preamp technology delivers pristine digital signals to any Lightpipe-compatible devices such as hard disk recorders and digital mixers. Octane is ideal for miking drum kits or bands - and the two mic/instrument channels are great for guitar, bass and other instruments. M-S matrix encoding lets you employ stereo miking techniques previously available only in pro studios. Octane even has analog preamp (direct) outs for each channel, making it the perfect upgrade for any digital audio interface or mixer. Word clock also means that you can sync multiple Octanes for as many channels as you need as your studio grows.

Subject:If you need extra inputs, you need this unit
Quality: M-Audio is known for quality and great price. I own and operate my own studio and needed more inputs on my Digidesign 003 Rack Plus. I tried other units which didn't give me the sound I expected. I finally got this unit and was amazed at the sound qulity, especially for the price. If you have an interface and need more inputs, you need this unit. Set up is a breeze in PT 8.
Features: Features are great. Two instrument inputs are right in the front which is great for guitar and bass. If you're using it with a Digidesign 003, set the ADAT sync to external and record at 48khz.
Ease of Use: Set up is a breeze. I didn't even read the manual. Setting up your DAW to take in the extra channels will be the only thing you have to worry about.
Sound: Sound is great, especially for drums. The controls are easy to use and are easy to check for levels. I find the unit sounds better after it's been on for a long time. Allow time for the unit to get hot to get the best sound. Althoug it sounds good either way.
Reliability: I've used it for about 4 months now. It's been in every studio session I've had with every band I've recorded and it's gone without a hitch.
Overall: Great product, plays nice with the rest of your gear.
