What is your overall opinion of this product?
If I could give it 6 stars, I would. It's an iconic American active bass & it didn't get to that lofty perch without proving itself. This bass is build with love; the wood's excellent, top-grade. The hardware's substantial & the controls are silky smooth. It's a versatile bass: Sure, you get that "Stingray sound," but if you want James Jamerson Motown sounds, you can dial it in. It's all here.
What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music?
As noted above: Top-flight quality in tone-woods, hardware, EQ-versatility for all musical applications. I play woolly funk, '60s-style. Sounds great on the 'Ray! I play old-school slap on this bass: Sounds just as great. And everything in between is all hit; no miss.
Are the features on the product what you were expecting? What are your favorite features?
Hard to choose a favorite from 100% amazing features. Well, I like the unfinished neck. It's very "grippy" & resists the slippery trouble you get with "finished" necks. The intonation is perfect thanks to the "custom" nut, the tuners are awesomely accurate, the bridge is a behemoth for sustain. The electronics blow the competition out of the atmosphere. And so on.
Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Just right. I've got average size hands/fingers & encounter no trouble, although I spent most of my years playing 4-string. I've made the switch to 5-string (entirely) & it's thanks to this bass. The controls are very easy to access while playing. Superb engineering all around.
How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin?
Any tone you want--it's in there. Dial it in. There are few basses that can offer this fine service.
How did the stain or paint job look?
Flawless finish. It's like a Fender Custom Shop bass. Hard to believe this is a "stock" instrument, but it is. Amazing value.
Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range?
Yep, as noted...This bass trumps all others in this price-range. It's a bargain. Save up for it or pay as you go.
How was the action out of the box?
Setup perfect. No buzzes, no fusses. I didn't change anything until the strings grew dead & I put on my preferred strings.
