| | | Subject: | Sony PCM-D50 Stereo Field Recorder: Good Deal! | | Quality:
| The recorder sells for $500.00 & I feel that this is a fair price, the recorder feels solid, looks & performs like a piece of pro recording gear, but beware that it only comes with the manual, an ac adapter, a usb cable & a copy of Sound Forge for transfering recordings to your computer in case you aren't already using a music software program, All other accessories are optional. | | Features:
| I bought the recorder to use primarily as a line level recorder, but I did want to occasionaly use the built in microphones for recording, so as a test I recorded a female singer/songwriter, just her voice with guitar using the build in mics in xy, again the recording was very good & natural sounding, both voice and guitar sounded very real & the recording included every bit of background air conditioner & outside traffic noise in all its glory....she was singing un-amplified, seated at a bar table, singing & playing very softly & self conciously, so there was plenty of opportunity for background noises to be represented. I laid the recorder on top of her guitar case about 24" from the source, a less than ideal recording environment, but it was only a test & she & I were both very pleased with the sound of the recording. I did make a built in mic recording of a live loud rock band, which also sounded great & very accurate & no problem with background noise when recording a loud source. | | Ease of Use:
| I was able to put the unit to use immediately, without consulting the manual. If you can opperate a tape recorder, you can opperate the PCM-D50. Hooking up to your computer is easy & downloads are super fast with the usb 2.0 interface....just drag & drop. It took about 2 minutes to download a 60 minute Stereo performance....thats more like it, no more waiting for realtime downloads from mini disc! | | Sound:
| The recordings sound so good its shocking....very nice top end, very smooth overall, so much headroom its comforting, I never worried about overdriving it. Easy to opperate right out of the box. Battery life is unbelivable, after making 3 recordings over 3 nights, 30 min, 75 min & 150 min for a total of 2 1/2 hours of recording, + listening to playback through headphones & then transfering all to my computer, the battery indicater is still showing a full charge, the manual says 12 to 20 hours of battery life depending on use & battery type & I am inclined to think that this is not an exageration.
I even transferred some of my vinyl albums by using the line in to the recorder from my stereo's rec out. I loaded the recording into my computer & used a pop n click filter, normalized & put it into itunes & then onto my ipod. This whole process was just as fast & easy as I had hoped. | | Reliability:
| I've only had it for a couple of weeks now, but it seems to be very solid & rugged enough to survive life in my gig bag, in the case of course. | | Overall:
| Inspite of the pricey optional accessories, I think that this machine is a heckuva good deal. I am very satisfied with my purchase, which I made from American Musical Supply because I have had good luck with them in the past. |
