Zoom HD8CD Multitrack Digital Recorder

Decisions decisions. Do you need a full-featured hard drive digital recorder or a computer loaded with DAW software and a pile of digital interfaces? ZOOM engineers have made this decision easy, just do both. With the new ZOOM HD Series recorders you get a fully loaded hard drive based digital workstation that allows you to record, in your studio or live on location, and then upload the tracks into your computer to the supplied Cubase LE DAW software. The ZOOM HD recorders also function as control surfaces so you can mix and edit your recordings on your computer.

Each ZOOM HD Series workstation is loaded with audio inputs (actually A/D interfaces) for connection to mics, instruments, and live consoles. Next, you can process everything with over 100 of ZOOM’s best on-board effects for guitar, bass, vocals, and mixdown. Also under your control is the full tilt studio drum/bass sequencer/sampler with velocity pads with 60 second sample time so song parts, sounds, or anything that you record can be loaded onto the velocity pads for easy access and playback.

Everything gets loaded onto a huge 80GB hard drive for up to 240 hours of recording time. At this point you can either mixdown your recording and burn a CD with the high-speed on-board CD burner (multi-track or stereo album modes) or move the audio WAV files to your computer through the USB-2 interface for further editing using the HD faders and knobs as your control surface.

Two units to choose from and a million songs to write, you better get busy!

ZOOM HD16CD – 16 tracks / 8 input channels with XLR-1/4-inch inputs with phantom power for up to 8 tracks of simultaneous recording.

ZOOM HD8 – 8 tracks / 2 input channels with XLR-1/4-inch inputs all with phantom power for 2 tracks of mono/stereo recording.

Zoom HD8CD Key Features

  • 8-track playback, 2-track simultaneous recording with 80 V-takes
  • 2 balanced XLR - 1/4-inch phone combo inputs with phantom power
  • 16 bit, 44.1 kHz linear PCM recording in WAV format
  • Over 100 effects for guitar/bass/vocal recording, mixing, and mastering
  • Drum and Bass machine with touch-sensitive pads and approximately 500 drum sounds
  • Built-in CD-R/RW drive and 80 GB Hard Drive
  • Control Surface function for DAW software
  • Bundled with Steinberg Cubase LE!
  • Sampler function lets you add original drum sounds to Drum Kit
  • Expanded sampling memory to 60 seconds
  • Built-in USB 2.0 port
  • Easily viewable 5-segment LED level meters
With the Zoom HD8CD, musicians can record songwriting sessions or live concerts directly to the HD8CD internal hard drive, move the audio files to a computer and use the recorder as a control surface for easy editing and mixing with (DAW) Digital Audio Workstation software. The HD8CD ships with Steinberg’s Cubase LE so everything you need is included.

The recorder features two balanced XLR-1/4-inch combo inputs with phantom power. Two of the inputs can switch to high impedance inputs allowing direct connection of guitars and basses, so users can plug into Zoom’s famous guitar and bass amp modeling capabilities in the on-board processor.

The HD8CD also comes with multi-effects such as reverb, delay and compression for use with instruments and vocals.

The HD8CD also boasts the largest hard disk in its class (80GB) and is also the only unit with velocity-sensitive pads for the on-board drum and bass sequencer/sampler. A super-fast CD-RW burner comes installed as well. The HD8CD enables 8-track of playback and 2-track of simultaneous recording with 160 virtual takes on each track.

Using the sampler function, users can add original samplers to its drum kit section, and its expanded sampling memory provides sampling time of up to 60 seconds. Files are recorded in WAV format for easy importing and editing on computers.

The HD8CD boasts over 100 effects for guitar / bass / vocal recording, mixing, and mastering. As a control surface, the unit connects to a personal computer with through a USB 2.0 interface.

Sound:
Subject:the best recorder/practice unit I've even owned!
Quality: Should be very dependable and like I said, it is solid!
Features: This thing ROCKS!! Of course only having it 2 weeks I haven't even begun to use it as much as I will; but because I had the other one, the difference and the upgraded quality, ease of use, tons of tools, burn cd's, etc, etc, etc, just makes this so awesome, I e-mailed my brother to tell him to get it. There's more than one best feature, but the way to change the bass chords is so easy and simple. The effects at first I thought, that's all, until I finished the manual and saw all the options at the end of the manual, which again explains everything well. The sound, the feel, the tools, the rhythm section, and the many controls, select, function key, auto punch in/out key, bounce; aw man, a lot of things I had to struggle with on the old unit, is just push the key now and go!
Ease of Use: This is much easier to use than the Zoom MRS-1044 multitrak recording studio I had until the sound went out after years of use. I loved that thing, but it wasn't so easy to get what they said I could get out of it, but it was great to practice to. The HD8 that I just got about 2 weeks ago, the manual has just got everything written out so well, they almost baby you; which is good for me, cuz I'm not the most proficent recording engineer!
Sound: My god, the tone is so clear yet so easy to change and add to. There's so many ways to improve and increase your sound. The pre-amp section surprised me, as at first I thought it was just a few effects, but man is it a lot.
Reliability: It'll last a long time in my opinion. Very solid, and you'll be surprised at first at how heavy it is when you pick it up!
Overall: Again, I'm not very profcient with some musical technology units, but this is well thought out, is easy to use, and the manual lays it all out for you! But the bells and whistles and all the tools and effects and rhythm section with lots of bass and drum patterns and kits, make this a total machine!

Subject:Totally Impressed
Quality: Very dependable so far. It should last a long, long time.
Features: The Zoom HD8CD is made with a metal housing and all it's components are well made. The on-board effects are awesome, especially the ones for mastering your mix. Also the bundled Cubase LE(DAW) Digital Audio Workstation software is a plus.
Ease of Use: After reviewing the manual(recommended), it didn't take long to record top quality sounding music with this product. The manual is straight forward and easy to follow. The placement of fade-rs, control knobs, pads, and LED level meters make it easy to operate this multi-track recorder.
Sound: The quality of my recordings I have done so far sound like a professional studio engineer was behind the controls.
Reliability: It has performed great with no problems since I purchased it.
Overall: I took my time and researched alot of different multi-track recorders in this price range and the Zoom HD8CD stood out above all the rest.

Subject:Is it what I expected?
Quality: The unit is built like a tank! I was impressed with the unit from the moment I took it out of the box. I have have the unit for a week so I really haven't had the chance to do alot yet. But Everything I have done so far is just great.
Features: It has So many features and I haven't found anything I did not like at this point. The drum sections is great the effects section is great and the quality is well worth the money Oh yeah don't forget it comes with cubase le software! What a great bargain!
Ease of Use: OF course you will need to read the manual and go through the motions to learn it's particular functions but it didn't take long to get an understanding and start recording within hours.
Sound: I have done a few recordings so far and the sound is top of the line. NO compaints
Reliability: I feel this unit should hold up to normal use with no problem and I believe it would hold up to rough use as well. But I'll baby mine! Build great
Overall: I believe I made a great choice when I chose the Zoom HD8. It offers much more then the other units out there and it butts heads with the best of them. VERY HAPPY
