The 'Nova' family was born in 1998 with the Supernova, which was the first of a series of powerful synthesizers. These quickly became industry standard 'big-synths' which are still used by countless artists and sound designers.
UltraNova is the latest addition to the family bringing the range right up to date with a host of new features and a more affordable price tag.
Novation UltraNova Synthesizer Features
- Brand new Nova-series synth engine based on Supernova II
- Touch-sense controls enable totally new sound-shaping and performance
- Totally gig-able with 37 full sized keys, a vocoder, and loads of controls
- Software plug-in editor and Patch Librarian for full visual editing
- Built-in 2 in 4 out USB audio interface and it can be bus powered
- Includes Dynamic Gooseneck Microphone
Software Editor
UltraNova has a powerful software editor that enables visual editing of all parameters. It can be used within DAWs as a plug-in editor.
Patch Librarian
UltraNova also ships with a patch librarian that can be hosted on Mac or PC. This enables the user to save an unlimited number patches to the host computer and organize them into folders. Each of the 300 patches that ship with UltraNova have been tagged to make it easy to search by category and genre from the hardware synth or the software patch librarian.
Vocoder
UltraNova has a 12 band vocoder and ships with a dynamic gooseneck microphone. In addition to putting your voice through the vocoder (via the microphone) you can also process other sounds by putting instruments - or pretty much anything - into UltraNova's stereo line inputs on the back panel.

Ultranova!
Quality
Would you consider this product to be made well? How dependable?
First impression is that.. it's plastic, but most synths are these days, so it's not that big of a deal. This scored 4 stars just for this fact. Overall, I can see this synth lasting a long time, I just wouldn't recommend dropping it too often.
Features
What do you consider to be the best features of this product? What features would you add to this product if you could?
| More than enough features available. I haven't had a chance to use the audio interface on this yet, so I can't comment on that.
I absolutely LOVE the touch sensors; very awesome idea and really makes it a blast to play. This isn't a one trick pony, there are some good things here, but that just gets me every time I play it. I would love to see a 49 or 61 key version.
Oh and of course the vocoder! Sounds great and the gooseneck mic is a nice addition. I'm not really sure how practical it will be in a live situation with all the sound on stage, but maybe. In my experience using vocoders live I have also used a gate before running into it. |
Ease of Use
How easy is this product to use? How easy is the product to use with other products? Did it take long for you to learn to use this product? Was the manual helpful? How playable do you consider this product to be?
Very easy to use. It can be slightly annoying to edit parameters using only the synth though. BUT, there is the software editor that I would give 10 stars for easily!
Sound
How is its Tone?
The Ultranova has a sound of its own (think how a Virus sounds like a Virus), well it's the same thing here. Of course you can emulate the old analog synths, but this pushes the limits much further and brings you some complex and original sounds. The Ultranova filter can get REALLY gritty sounding. I absolutely love it.
Action
How was the action out of the box?
The keys feel like your average synth keys. Nothing special here.
Value
Was this item an overall good value?
Great value! I feel the Ultranova and Venom are the two synths in competition right now and I was more than happy with spending the extra money and getting the Ultranova. Well worth every penny!!
