Rode NT2A Vocal Condenser Microphone

The RODE NT2A is a professional, multi-pattern studio condenser microphone. The NT2A is based on the legendary NT2 - the tone behind countless recording hits of the last decade. A professional large capsule (1 inch) studio microphone incorporating three-position pick-up patterns, PAD and high pass filter switches conveniently located on the mic body.

At the heart of the NT2A is the Australian designed and manufactured HF1 dual diaphragm capsule. The frequency and transient response of this transducer has been voiced to complement today's modern recording techniques, and yet still evoke the silky smooth character of the legendary microphones of the 50's and 60's. These features provide the flexibility and superlative audio characteristics that make the NT2-A one of the most versatile condenser mics available.

Subject:Sibilance, sibilance, sibilance
Quality: I didn't get that intimate sound I like from this mic and the sibilance is off the hook EEK! But maybe I just depends on the voice type and the preamp, I used a Mackie with XDR Mic Preamps. I also had a Neumann TLM-103 before this mic and it sound excellent with the Mackie preamps.
Features: Features are pretty good.
Ease of Use: Very easy to use, no complaints on that end.
Sound: This mic sound terrible, maybe it depends on your voice type, this mic has a mondo sibilance, I tried everything to try to get this mic to sound decent. This is definitely not a mic for female vocalist.
Value: Depends on voice type and preamp, for me this was not a good value.

Subject:A great mic for male vocals! And a great deal...
Quality: The first thing I noticed when I unpacked the mic is how heavy it was! Seriously it's built like a tank! The polarity and pad buttons feel sturdy and overall it's pretty impressive for such an inexpensive mic. I expect it will last me a long time with normal use.
Features: The switchable polar patterns at this price point are great. I am very happy with the rear/side rejection on the cardioid setting. The omni is ok, but my personal favorite is the figure 8. It really opens up the room without muddiness and gives you that little bit of natural space to work with.
Ease of Use: On our male vocalists it was easy to mix. It sat nice and forward in the mix and I barely touched the EQ. I was just using the pre's on my Allen & Heath desk, but I'm confident that this mic will really shine with a sweet pre.
Sound: This is a good mic for dudes. We used it on both male vocals and rap, and female vocals, and ended up switching her to a different mic. It was a little too beefy in the 1k-2k range for our r&b alto chick. No worries, it sounded fabulous on our guys. Rode seems to give this one a very slight touch of that mid range warmth, but without all the zingy presence that many other low priced mics have. I have used the Rode NTK before and liked it, but it was more of a specialty mic because it can add too much character (think vintage-ish sound). The NT2A however, is TOTALLY different and a better all around mic because it has just a very small touch of that saturated type sound. I really like having this mic around and I would definitely recommend picking one up! It has the sound and functions of ones that cost 2x as much as it does. And Rode gives you a 10 year warranty, like really, that's cool.
