Roland Fantom X6 61 Key Synthesizer Workstation

Roland Fantom X6 61 Key Synthesizer Workstation

The Roland Fantom X6, like the rest of the Fantom-X Series, is the world’s first Giga-Workstation keyboard, giving musicians nearly 1GB of wave memory when fully expanded and powerful 128-voice polyphony.

The ease-of-use of this incredible sampler-based keyboard has become legendary. This is the workstation that all workstations aspire to be because right out of the box, you'll be groovin' in no time at all!

Launch Roland Fantom-X6 Product Demo

The synthesis section has all-new waveforms and room for 4 SRX expansions, while the sampler’s RAM can be expanded to 544MB, with an inexpensive DIMM chip - enough memory to use like a digital recorder. The Fantom-X Series is also the first line of workstation keyboards with a color LCD screen.

The Roland Fantom X6's 2nd most obvious unique feature is the new, improved 16 rubber Dynamic pads. Use them for drums, vocals or sounds with the Fantom’s amazing realtime timestretch, wave edit and chop capability and its ability to load .WAV/AIFF files right off your computer. (Of course it samples - analog or digital.) For that matter, use the PC card slot for up to 1 GB storage or even an external drive. The very cool USB file sharing feature has been upgraded to also act as a MIDI interface.

Another unique tool is the Skip Back sampling that always lets you go back in time and capture whatever you just played. These waveforms immediately draw themselves on the color display. If you are playing to a groove, the wave is set to be cut and adjusted by the beat (it appears on a barline grid).

When you are gazing at the hi-rez LCD screen you will feel like you are at a powerful computer based sequencer... and you are! In fact, these keyboards use a new Roland chip that is their most powerful integrated DSP ever. The Fantom can record 400,000 note songs, with 480 TPQN. The sequencer section has been refined. Check out the very cool “tiled” screen that shows your favorite 16 edit pages, instantly available from the sample pads. All editing options exist, with amazing graphics.

Finally you can work in a completely seamless world of audio/MIDI without feeling like you are at an office terminal. Of course, you can instantly store all your work to your home computer if that is convenient. Also the arpeggiator is completely programmable with the coolest display screens around.

We’ve left the sounds for last, but they may be the Fantom’s strong suit. With 128 meg of over 1400 classic Roland waveforms, and room for 4 64 SRX expansion boards, every sound you need is at your fingertips. One piano patch alone, boasts over 700 samples (4 stereo samples for EACH note!)

On the back panel you will find 4 Line outputs (2 stereo or 4 mono), stereo Line input and 24-bit S/PDIF I/O.

Roland Fantom X6 Features

  • 128-voice workstation with 61-note keyboard
  • Seamless integration of audio and MIDI using gorgeous new ROM waves and sampling with realtime timestretch capability
  • 128MB wave ROM includes quality-focused sounds like 88-key split piano and more

*V-LINK requires optional Edirol DV-7PR with software version 1.50 or higher.

V-LINK: The Future of Performance
The Fantom-X Series is not only a great choice for studio musicians, but also for live performers. Using Roland’s V-LINK technology, musicians can trigger and manipulate video clips when connected to an Edirol video editor like the DV-7PR. Imagine being able to instantly trigger clips from the Dynamic Pad Bank, or create transitions and effects using the pitch bender and knobs. It’s a live performer’s dream!

Subject:Everything you could want in a Workstation Keyboard
Quality: The X6 was a dream come true. I had never owned a hardware synth that had me so excited as I opened the box. it was solid, the color screen a HUGE improvement over anything I had before (all Korgs). Being one of the first workstations to include a 4x4 pad arrangement right there was a BIG bonus!!!
Features: The screen, the operating system, most of the sounds (drums were a tiny bit disappointing, the piano was great), the 4x4 pads, the pattern recording and triggering (much more intuitive than Korg's old RPPR feature).
Ease of Use: It took me about a week to figure out how to program patterns and get them to trigger off the pads, but once I figure that out, this thing was like having the best of Roland's keyboards and the best of their highly regarded 'groove box' line up all in one package. I sold my MC-909 and Korg Triton LE once I learned I could do everything with this one!
Sound: The sounds are great, although i've been spoiled by soft samplers by the time I purchased it. The acoustic drums were a little dated-sounding (in 2005), but the rest were just great. The piano variations were really cool and the ability to adjust the little photo of the grand piano visually and hearing the effect on sound was great! The synth sounds were pretty good and timely...ready to go for the radio out of the box. The limitation on the number of simultaneous insert and send effects was annoying (again, I had been spoiled by the soft synth world).
Action: The key action was great...not full weighted (which 61 keys never are), but a good tactile response for playing everything from brass synth lines, strings, to pianos without that cheap 'squishy' feel that a lot of manufacturers had started to use to cut down costs.
Value: Back in 2005 when i bought it, it was top of the line and pretty pricey. Now that the G6 is out there are some incredible deals on the Fantom X series right here on AMS that you just shouldn't pass up! The newer OS even allows 8 tracks of audio recording, so if the smaller screen (compared to the new G6) doesn't bother you, pick one up now as a bargain and you can easily be making tunes on it for years to come with no regrets!

QUALITY:
Definitely a quality product. Rugged design and great looking piece of gear. The computer screen will blow you away.

FEATURES:
It does it all. Every producer should have this VERSATILE piece of gear.

EASE OF USE:
If you're a first timer, things can be pretty complicated. But for those who are familiar with the sequencer/workstation environment; it's a breeze getting around. Plus it's fun to explore all the capabilities.

VALUE:
It's a bit pricey but the work performance will pay for itself in no time.

SOUND:
Guitars are un-impressive. Keys are Excellent. Synths are REALLY cool. On board effects make this toy a creative tool for sound engineers. This along with an MPC makes a perfect pair. The pads are ok, but not impressive.

Subject:The Super Producers Secret Weapon
Overall: I went to my local Sam Ash and I was lured to the new Fantom X6 by its full color screen. At first I was like "not another useless recreation of the Fantom again".I played around with it and I would say truly that it is not the same as the other Fantoms. This workstation is a blend between the MC909 and the Fantom S.I bought a MC909 due to its awesome capabilities but I wish I could have waitied for the Fantom X to come out.I would say again that it is a Fantom and a MC909 improved twice over.I am not the only one who feel this way.I have a super producer friend(who shall remain nameless) of mine who just started using it and he is using it on a famous artist's project. If the Fantom X6 can help others make hits,I think it can help you too...I mean if you are into Roland products like I am.
